New developments in the case of a son pouring gasoline on his biological mother and burning her in Tra Vinh

(NLDO) - The son who poured gasoline on his biological mother in Tra Vinh showed signs of severe depression and often quarreled with his mother.

On March 1, the Criminal Police Department of Tra Vinh Province Police initiated a case, prosecuted the accused and sent Duong Quoc Trung (21 years old; residing in Ward 7, Tra Vinh City) for a psychiatric examination to investigate the act of murder.

According to the police, after the incident, realizing that Trung had many signs of mental illness, the authorities took Trung to the Southwest Regional Forensic Psychiatric Center (Can Tho City) to request a psychiatric assessment to consolidate the case file for handling according to regulations.

As reported by Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper , on the afternoon of February 24, Ms. NNPL (42 years old; Trung's biological mother) was doused with a 1.5-liter bottle of gasoline by Trung and then set on fire with a lighter. Trung also used bricks and nunchaku to hit Ms. L on the head.

When the incident occurred, many people near the scene used fire extinguishers to put out the fire and control and arrest Trung. Ms. L. suffered severe burns and was taken to Tra Vinh General Hospital for emergency treatment, then transferred to Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC) for treatment.

Trung used to work in another province and has been home since January 2025. Recently, Trung has shown signs of severe depression and often quarrels with his mother.
