Car imports into Vietnam decrease sharply

In January 2025, Vietnam imported only 7,226 complete cars of all kinds, worth 163 million USD. Compared to December 2024, the number of imported cars decreased by 43.9%.

Information from the General Department of Customs shows that, according to preliminary statistics of the General Department of Customs, in January 2025, the number of complete car The number of types of import customs declaration registrations decreased by 43.9% (equivalent to a decrease of 5,655 units) compared to the import volume in the previous month.

Specifically, the import volume this month was 7,226 units, equivalent to 163 million USD. Meanwhile, the General Department of Customs recorded 12,881 imported complete cars of all kinds last month with a value of 304 million USD.

In January 2025, all types of completely built-up cars registered for customs procedures imported into Vietnam mainly originated from 3 main markets: Indonesia with 2,621 units, China with 2,595 units and Thailand with 1,631 units. Cars with 9 seats or less, in January 2025, 5,698 units were imported into Vietnam with a value of 97.7 million USD, accounting for 78.9% of the imported complete cars of all types. With this result, the number of cars with 9 seats or less imported into Vietnam in the month decreased by 45.7% (equivalent to a decrease of 4,789 units) compared to the previous month.

Of which, the number of vehicles registered for import declarations is mainly at the border gate area, Ho Chi Minh City port with 2,606 units and Hai Phong city with 2,229 units. Completely built-up cars with 9 seats or less registered for import in January 2024 are mainly cars originating from Indonesia with 2,621 units; from Thailand with 1,522 units and from China with 1,216 units...

There is currently no official information explaining the cause of the sharp decline in the number of imported cars.
