According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in February 2025, livestock product imports reached more than 373 million USD, bringing the total value of meat imports in the first 2 months of this year to more than 734 million USD, an increase of 50.3% over the same period in 2024.

The average import price of pork to Vietnam is at 2,672 USD/ton (about more than 65,000 VND/kg), an increase of more than 20% compared to the same period in 2024.

According to the General Department of Customs, among 13 import markets, India is the largest supplier of meat and meat products to Vietnam. Following India are Russia, the US, Brazil, Canada, Poland, the Netherlands, etc.

On March 11, Tuoi Tre Online recorded the market price of live pigs in the southern provinces, the price fluctuated from 75,000 - 83,000 VND/kg. Thus, compared to the price of domestic meat, imported meat is much cheaper.

In some markets in Ho Chi Minh City, pork prices are increasing day by day. For example, pork chops are priced at 165,000 VND/kg; pork thighs have increased to 135,000 - 137,000 VND/kg; pork armpits, lean meat, and thighs have new prices of 160,000 - 180,000 VND/kg. However, purchasing power is very weak.

Pork prices have been rising due to a shortage of supply, with African swine fever having hit farmers and large businesses hard since last year. But many experts say the shortage is short-lived.

Similarly, the price of chicken meat in the market is also falling sharply. Chicken prices range from 43,000 - 79,000 VND/kg. The highest price of industrial chicken weighing 3.3 - 3.4 kg/bird sold at farms is only 23,500 VND/kg.

The reason is that supply exceeds market demand; official imports increase, causing domestic chicken prices to drop.

Fresh and chilled pork from Vietnam is popular in the Hong Kong (China) market.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in the opposite direction, in February, Vietnam exported meat worth 21.9 million USD, down 8.8% over the same period.

Vietnam's meat and meat products are exported mostly to the Hong Kong market (China). The main export items are fresh, chilled or frozen pork, mainly suckling pigs and frozen whole pigs.
