Highland farmers are increasingly prosperous from developing OCOP products

With its potential advantages, Son La province has synchronized development solutions, improved agricultural products, built quality OCOP products, met market demand, and gradually improved farmers' lives.

Son La has diverse OCOP products

Promoting the advantages of each locality, Muong La district (Son La) has directed functional agencies and communes to review, appraise, inspect and evaluate the reality, and guide farmers and agricultural cooperatives to proactively participate in the "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) program. At the same time, support cooperatives and people to build OCOP product registration dossiers; build and register trademarks; digital transformation; register barcodes, trace the origin and build a website to introduce products; print packaging and product labels.

Mr. Lu Van Qui, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Muong La district, said: Currently, Muong La district has 14 OCOP products, including 12 3-star OCOP products and 2 4-star OCOP products.

An OCOP product of Muong La district that is well known is "Dai Hung Thinh Apple" of Hung Thinh Cooperative, Sub-area 1, Muong Bu Commune (Muong La, Son La). Mr. Nguyen Dinh Huong, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Director of Hung Thinh Cooperative, said: Currently, the Cooperative has 20 members growing 50 hectares of apples recognized to meet VietGAP standards. In 2024, the average yield will reach 15 tons of fruit/ha, the selling price will be 15 - 50 thousand VND/kg, supplying about 1 ton of apples to supermarket chains and clean fruit stores in and outside the province every day.

In Yen Chau, realizing the potential and economic value of the local single-clove garlic plant, Tay Bac Cooperative (Yen Chau, Son La) has researched and successfully manufactured a black garlic fermentation and drying machine. In 2018, the cooperative's black garlic reached consumers, with an initial output of about 1 ton/year. Up to now, the cooperative has expanded its production scale, with 15 fermentation and drying furnaces, with a capacity of 1.5 tons/time, producing an average of 45 tons of black garlic products/year, with a revenue of over 10 billion VND.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Yen Linh, Director of the Cooperative, said: Fresh garlic after harvest is classified, washed, roots and stem ends are removed, then placed in trays and placed in the oven for 30 days until the garlic skin dries, the garlic cloves inside turn black, soft, supple and sweet. In 2020, the Cooperative registered with the District People's Committee to support the completion of the application to participate in the OCOP program. To date, the Cooperative's black garlic products have been recognized as 3-star OCOP. In addition, the Cooperative has also developed other products such as black garlic soaked in honey, black garlic wine, On Oc ancient Shan Tuyet tea, dried male papaya flowers, dried bananas, and dried plums with the "Diep Bach" brand name, which are popular with consumers.

Talking to reporters, Mr. Duong Gia Dinh, Deputy Chief of the Standing Office of the Office of New Rural Area Coordination of Son La province said: Son La province currently has more than 200 advantageous agricultural products with high economic and commercial value, which can be developed into OCOP products, products with regional characteristics that are quite rich in variety, including 5 main groups: Food; beverages; herbs; souvenirs; services, rural tourism.

Developing effective and sustainable OCOP products

After more than 5 years of implementation, Son La province has 202 OCOP products, including 1 5-star product, 62 4-star products and 139 3-star products. The common point of cooperatives and enterprises when developing OCOP products is that they are proactive in changing production thinking, innovating science and technology to improve product quality; promoting and consuming products through digital platforms. Many products are available at a number of supermarket chains and agents, retail stores in the market inside and outside the province.

According to Mr. Duong Gia Dinh, Son La continues to innovate, develop cooperative economy, link production according to value chains associated with the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program, apply high technology, attract potential enterprises to invest in agriculture; support enterprises and cooperatives in standards and technical regulations in the production and processing of products; prioritize resources for developing agricultural and forestry processing, contributing to promoting the development of agricultural and rural economy. In 2025, Son La province strives to have 30 or more products evaluated and classified as OCOP products meeting 3-star standards or higher.

At the same time, orient OCOP subjects to create differences, increase product value, diversify product sizes and designs to suit consumer tastes and needs; ensure raw material areas, input material quality, traceability; maintain and proactively update annual regulations, such as: Certification of food safety eligibility, barcodes, periodic testing of food safety indicators...

Son La is striving to build sustainable OCOP products, ensuring both quality and quantity, contributing to further enhancing the value of the province's typical products, improving people's income, promoting the advantages of available raw material areas, contributing to local socio-economic development.
