Discipline students with positive solutions

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên13/11/2023

DO NOT ENCOURAGE SUSPENSION OF STUDENTS WHO VIOLATE THEM

Circular 32 of the Ministry of Education and Training stipulates that students who commit violations during their studies and training will be educated or disciplined in the form of warnings, reprimands, or temporary suspension from school...

Recently, there have been many cases of student conflicts leading to acts of school violence, but when giving specific disciplinary measures, school leaders have had to consider carefully.

Requiring students who violate discipline to read is one of the positive disciplinary solutions that some schools are implementing.

For example, in the case of three female students beating and kicking another female student in the restroom of Nguyen Van Troi Secondary School (Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City), the school's disciplinary council recently agreed not to suspend them from school but to lower their conduct and practice reading, writing reviews and telling stories about the content of the books read during the first meetings of the week.

On November 11, speaking with Thanh Nien reporter, Mr. Trinh Vinh Thanh, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Go Vap District (HCMC), said: "The Department of Education and Training does not encourage schools to use suspension from school, but instead use positive and effective forms of discipline to help students become self-aware and educate themselves."

"Students have the mentality of wanting to show off in front of everyone. Even fighting and posting clips online is to make people know them. Although this is a negative way. So why don't our schools create conditions for students to express themselves in a positive way? That is also a way to help them self-regulate their behavior," Mr. Thanh stated his opinion.

Mr. Lam Huy Hoang, Principal of Dong Da Secondary School (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), also shared: "The form of discipline must be both educational and effective in deterring students."

Regarding the view of not encouraging the use of disciplinary measures such as suspension of students, Mr. Duong Tri Dung, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, shared: "In the face of violence and clashes between students in schools, each student is hurt and needs to be cared for and shared. Organizing education, coordinating to resolve and handle conflicts among students is the responsibility of the school, but it must be in accordance with current regulations, appropriate to each subject and specific incident, and cannot be rigid. The plan must not affect the psychology of students. When students resort to violence, they are having problems and have not found support from adults. Therefore, the most important thing is to educate and support students in their awareness and skills training so that when problems arise, they know how to behave appropriately."

C. MOVING FROM VIOLATION TO POSITIVE ACTION

After nearly 6 months of implementing an "unusual" punishment for students, by making them read books when they violate school rules, Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) has reaped "sweet fruits".

Master Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School, said that instead of picking up trash, arranging tables and chairs, writing self-criticisms, copying fines, being suspended from school... the school's students will be "punished"... to go to the library.

The offending student will read a book and write a review.

According to Mr. Phu, the school's students responded and did not feel burdened by this punishment. They wrote their feelings after each story they read and adjusted themselves. The phenomena of littering, lack of awareness of preserving school property... have almost disappeared. Instead, students know how to protect property, school supplies, decorate their classrooms, and change from violating behavior to positive actions. "In particular, through regular sharing with students, I realized that they were happy because they felt the love of their teachers for them. Even though they were punished when they made mistakes, it was a show of love, not rigid discipline," Mr. Phu informed.

Therefore, Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu does not agree with the form of suspending students from school because, according to him, if there is no control and management, the time away from school can push students to commit other violations and mistakes.

In addition to applying the form of students who violate the book will read a book and write a review, Principal Bui Thi Xuan School proposed a form of discipline that does not allow students to attend class but still come to school. For example, students who violate the book will not be allowed to sit in class with their friends but will have to copy the lesson and study by themselves in another classroom.

Disciplinary measures for students who have violated the law in the past

- In the case of 3 female students beating a friend in the restroom, the clip was circulated on social media, the Disciplinary Council of Nguyen Van Troi Secondary School (Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City) applied the following disciplinary measure: Not passing training or receiving poor conduct in the first semester. In addition, within 2 weeks, during recess, these students will read books in the school library under the supervision of teachers.

- Regarding the incident of a male student repeatedly hitting his classmate on the head and face in class at Dong Da Secondary School (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City), the school's Disciplinary Council has agreed on the following disciplinary action: The male student who repeatedly slapped and hit his classmate on the head and face will be suspended from school for 2 weeks and have his first semester performance evaluation reduced. The male student who was beaten by his classmate will have his performance evaluation reduced for the month. The students who filmed the clip and stood by to watch will also be suspended from school for 1 week and have their performance evaluation reduced for the month.

- In the case of a 7th grade male student at Dai Dong Secondary School (Thach That District, Hanoi) being beaten by a group of people and hospitalized, the school's disciplinary council disciplined 8 students involved in the assault with warnings, reprimands, and the highest level was a one-week suspension from school...

RESTRICTIONS ON RECORDING DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS ON REPORTS

Starting from the 2023-2024 school year, Ho Chi Minh City will implement a set of criteria for happy schools in schools with a positive and progressive view on education. In the set of criteria, there are instructions that the report card is a record of the entire learning journey and the entire future journey of each person. Therefore, teachers need to record the advantages, while the disadvantages and shortcomings are just a part of student life.

When assessing shortcomings, the school needs to consider the entire monitoring process after coordinating with families and supporting students. It is necessary to carefully consider the wording when commenting on students' academic records. The school keeps records related to student discipline according to regulations. Limit recording disciplinary measures on students' academic records.

Agreeing with this policy, Master Phan The Hoai, a high school literature teacher in Binh Tan District, said that when Ho Chi Minh City builds happy schools, building the above criteria is appropriate. Master Hoai suggested that positive disciplinary measures such as making students who violate the law become group leaders, deputy group leaders, class presidents, and deputy class presidents could be applied to help them develop a sense of responsibility towards the collective.

Talking about forms of discipline and positive education, Mr. Duong Tri Dung shared: "Educating students means that each individual must be educated according to their own abilities and circumstances. Education is needed for students to be aware of their behavior and have forms of discipline to deter them, but how to discipline them so that they are aware of their behavior and correct it, not so that students are afraid."

It is important to monitor students' implementation of discipline.

Disciplinary action is only the last step, what needs to be done is education, reminders, correction, and even deterrence. The form of discipline, whether it is severe or mild, is not as important as monitoring how students perform it, whether they are consciously trying to improve themselves? Besides, the role of the homeroom teacher is very important because they are the ones who are close to the students, the bridge between the family and the school. Therefore, priority must be given to supporting homeroom teachers in performing their duties. If they do not receive enough support from the school and parents, the education of students will certainly not achieve good results.

School suspension can make students unhappy

Suspension of students from school is not an effective disciplinary solution. Instead of helping students understand their mistakes and change, this method of suspension can make them feel dissatisfied, not understand why they are being disciplined, and in fact many of them even drop out of school, which is a failure of education.
