At the beginning of the new year, teachers send their wishes and hopes for a successful year for Vietnamese education.
A truly happy school
Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, who has worked in the education and training sector for many years and is currently running a private kindergarten in Ho Chi Minh City, shared: "The Ministry of Education and Training is aiming to build happy schools, and Ho Chi Minh City has also implemented a set of criteria for happy schools. This means that we want an educational environment that creates happy students and teachers. However, there is still a serious disease of achievement, creating great pressure on students to study. It is heartbreaking to see primary and secondary school students having both a full schedule of regular classes and a busy schedule of extra classes."
Mr. Tuan believes that the root of the widespread pressure to study and take extra classes is the disease of achievement from adults. Therefore, reducing the disease of achievement also means creating conditions to reduce pressure on primary and secondary school students. Stressful studying, if any, should only be at higher levels. The goal of general education is to prepare students with a solid educational foundation so that when they enter higher levels of education, they will learn the necessary skills to become a professional workforce.
In the first days of the new year of At Ty 2025, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan also hopes that the implementation of English as a second language in schools will soon be effectively implemented.
"We can choose to build English-medium schools similar to the specialized school model. There will be teachers who are fluent in English and the curriculum will be taught in English, with academic cooperation with foreign schools. This should be implemented carefully and step by step. We can pilot 1-2 schools in big cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, then evaluate the specific results," Mr. Tuan suggested.
