According to Swedish television station SVT on July 30, researcher Ignat Kulkov of Malardalen University (MDU) said that scientists predict that human life expectancy could increase to 100 - 120 years in the next 50 years or longer, at least in developed countries.
Explaining the results of the study - carried out with colleagues at universities in Finland, France and the UK and published in the scientific journal Futures - expert Kulkov said that older people can be as healthy as when they were 40, largely thanks to the rapid development of technology.
Kulkov said more and more people are wearing health-tracking devices that are connected to doctors and hospitals. These devices will help doctors make recommendations on lifestyle changes to improve health and prolong life.
Scientists have also found that advances in other areas have contributed to the increase in human life expectancy. In addition, experience in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic has helped track the virus more effectively, while artificial intelligence (AI) has been used to diagnose diseases faster and develop new treatments.
Personalized medicine with individually tailored drugs is also expected to contribute to improving health, said Mr. Kulkov.
However, he warned that there are still new challenges such as climate change that could have the biggest impact on health care systems and human lives not only in the future but also in the present.
