Over the years, Meritorious Artist Vi Thi Lien, Van Quan district, has advised on organizing many cultural activities such as: District-level folk song festival, seminars on indigenous cultural knowledge, and building programs to serve political and cultural events of the province and district.

With her positive contributions, she received a Certificate of Merit from the Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (DTC) in the 2024 Meeting with Outstanding Artists and Artisans. Ms. Lien shared: “I always consider the establishment of folk culture clubs and directly teaching heritage to the younger generation as a top priority. Because modern society with new cultural flows can easily fade traditional values.” Since 2015, she has taught luan singing and folk songs to more than 500 students.

Sharing the same passion, Meritorious Artist Hoang Thi Thuy, Van Lang district, devoted herself to preserving and spreading Then singing, Tinh lute, and Chau dance. She was not afraid of difficulties, regularly going to schools and villages to teach over 30 classes, attracting over 400 students. She also composed nearly 20 new Then songs praising her homeland.

They are just two of many artisans who are contributing to preserving and promoting intangible cultural heritage. Currently, the province has over 1,500 folk artisans who hold various types of heritage such as: language, writing, social customs, folk performing arts, traditional festivals, handicrafts, folk knowledge... From 2017 to now, artisans have directly participated in teaching over 500 intangible heritage classes, "passing on the torch" to thousands of students.

With the contribution of artisans, the traditional cultural movement in localities is increasingly developing. From 2022 to now, the whole province has established nearly 100 new clubs, bringing the total number to nearly 300 traditional cultural clubs. Notably, from 2015 to now, the province has had 9 national intangible cultural heritages and 2 representative intangible cultural heritages of humanity recognized.

According to Mr. Phan Van Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lang Son province, artisans are “living treasures” and play a key role in preserving cultural heritage. In recent years, the sector has advised on many policies to reward and support artisans; organized cultural exchange activities inside and outside the province; invited artisans to participate in teaching heritage in schools and the community.

From 2017 to present, each year the province organizes 3 to 5 groups of artisans to participate in cultural tourism events, performing heritage at major festivals. Many unique cultural performances are organized, such as: folk singing, lion and cat dance, traditional handicraft performances (weaving, indigo dyeing, knitting), ethnic cuisine (making cakes, roasting pigs, roasting ducks) ...

In 2020, the province successfully organized the first provincial folk song festival with the participation of about 400 artisans. The lion and cat dance competitions in 2022 and 2024 continue to create a healthy playground, honor artisans and preserve unique cultural features. In addition, the provincial folk song and cultural heritage conservation associations also play a good role in connecting and encouraging artisans to contribute to the heritage.

In 2024, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will coordinate with the People's Committees of districts and cities to implement a policy to support 26 ethnic minority artisans. This is a great source of encouragement, helping artisans continue to stick with the work of teaching and preserving intangible cultural heritage.

Meritorious Artist Ninh Xuan Nhat, Thien Tan Commune, Huu Lung District shared: “I am always passionate about teaching folk songs, customs and beliefs of my people to people and the younger generation. Thanks to support from all levels, the classes are becoming more and more systematic, helping me have more conditions to spread the love for the cultural heritage of the Cao Lan ethnic group.”

Caring for, honoring and creating conditions for artisans is the fundamental solution to preserve and promote the value of intangible cultural heritage in the community. Such attention not only helps the heritage to last, but also arouses national pride, building an advanced Vietnamese culture with a strong identity.
