The Hung Thoong cave system is located deep in the core zone of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park (Quang Binh). Hung in Phong Nha language means valley. The name Hung Thoong is because it is surrounded by a stream of the same name.

The Hung Thoong cave system is part of the strictly protected area of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park with many caves such as Tron cave, Hung cave, mountain lake, Thung cave or Nightmare sinkhole. The only way to access this area is to walk along the trails in the forest.

Among them, the Nightmare sinkhole near km 17 of Highway 20 - Quyet Thang is an interesting and mysterious place waiting for adventurous people to explore.

Mr. Le Luu Dung, Director of Jungle Boss Company Limited (Phong Nha town, Bo Trach district) said that this sinkhole is called a nightmare by explorers because of the difficulty in conquering it. "The depth from the mouth to the bottom of the hole is estimated at about 250m. The only way to access it is to swing down from the top and then climb back up. Only people with a lot of experience and good physical strength can make this trip," said Mr. Dung.

Because of that difficulty, up to now the number of people who have set foot at the bottom of the Nightmare sinkhole has not exceeded 10.

According to Mr. Dung, because the crater is not too large, the plant system in the crater is quite unfavorable for growth but is also diverse in species.

Similar to some other sinkholes, the bottom of Nightmare sinkhole has an underground river system with very clear water. "The unit's expedition team has only reached a short section of the underground river. It is predicted that this river connects to a cave in the cave system in Hung Thoong. Because of this mystery, this will be a destination for those who are passionate about exploration," said Mr. Dung.

To serve those who love to experience, the tourism operator asked for permission from the authorities to survey and organize zipline activities across the Nightmare sinkhole.

Visitors will be able to admire the entire sinkhole from above, feeling the sensation of floating in mid-air as they look down at the bottom of the deep hole.

After conducting a survey and having the safety plan approved by the authorities, the operator will put the zipline system into service for tourists. According to Mr. Dung, this system is designed with 3 international standard stainless steel cables. Each cable has a load capacity of up to 7 tons. Of which, 2 main sliding cables will be connected to the safety belt through a pulley system, the remaining cable will be connected and play a protective role. All anchor points of the zipline are arranged independently, calculated according to the angles of equal force and equipped with an active braking system.

Mr. Dung said that in the coming time, the unit will survey safety and rescue plans to put the Nightmare sinkhole exploration experience into operation. "Bringing tourists to explore the bottom of the cave and the underground river system requires a carefully developed plan. Because swinging from a height of 250m is a challenge that requires tourists to have a lot of skills and physical strength. Along with that, there needs to be a lot of modern equipment to ensure safety," Mr. Dung shared.
