Accordingly, in Decision No. 3980/QD-BVHTTDL of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Decision recognized the Forest Worship Ceremony of the Mong people in Na Hau commune, Van Yen district to be included in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage. "Forest Worship Ceremony", also known as "Forest Tet" is held annually in early spring. This is the largest and most important traditional ceremony of the year for the Mong people in Na Hau.
According to the Mong people's concept, the green forests, forbidden forests, and sacred forests near the village are places to protect the villagers from the wind, flash floods, and provide them with food, water to drink, and to irrigate their fields. Keeping the forest lush is also keeping the villagers safe and warm. Every year on the last day of the first lunar month, the villages in Na Hau commune gather in the "forbidden forests, sacred forests" of the village to organize the "Forest God Worship Ceremony".
After the Forest Tet festival, according to Mong people's custom, all villages of Na Hau commune prohibit the forest for 3 days to thank the Forest God. Also during these 3 days, everyone absolutely follows the taboos prescribed by customary law, which are not to go into the forest to cut down green trees, not to bring green leaves from the forest home, not to dig up roots, break bamboo shoots, not to dig the ground, not to let livestock roam free, not to dry clothes outdoors, not to grind corn, pound rice...
Sacred and unique traditional rituals imbued with traditional cultural identity, along with the love for the forest and the responsibility to protect the forest of the Mong people in Na Hau commune, are passed down from generation to generation.
Forest Tet is also an opportunity for local people, as well as tourists, to appreciate each tree and each forest more and educate people about environmental protection, building a green, harmonious, unique and happy life.
