Tourist Tran Thuy Minh Ha (Da Nang) and her friends came to Ly Son Island for a vacation. She said she had been to many pagodas across the country. But Hang Pagoda is the most special pagoda because there are no monks.

"I think Hang Khong Su Pagoda in Ly Son is one of the most unique pagodas in Vietnam. The pagoda is located entirely inside a volcanic cave. This is a place worth visiting. It is truly beautiful," said Ms. Ha.

According to researcher Le Hong Khanh - former deputy director of the Quang Ngai Provincial Museum, in the notes of French archaeologist H. Parmentier, Hang Pagoda had traces (although few) showing that this place was once a place of worship for the Cham people.

When the Cham people left the island and headed south, the cave fell into disrepair. Along with it came mysterious oral histories.

When the Vietnamese arrived, explored and governed Ly Son island for a while, they did not visit this area, because of word of mouth about the darkness and mystery of this cave.

Following the genealogy and legacy of the first families who opened An Hai village when the Vietnamese set foot on the island, about 4 centuries ago, under the reign of King Le Kinh Tong, the Tran Cong Thanh brothers were the first to find the cave.

After arriving at the cave, the youngest brother did not return home but stayed in the cave for unknown reasons. Since then, the Ly Son people have passed down word of mouth that this man learned the art of immortality in the cave. That is a legend, not found in any written records.

Since the Vietnamese came here, the cave that was once a place of worship for the Cham people became a Buddhist temple for the Vietnamese people with the name of Hang Pagoda, or Thien Khong Thach Tu.
