Salt making in Bac Lieu is a traditional craft with techniques passed down through many generations.
According to a survey, there are families in the locality that have continued the salt making profession for the 6th generation. Although the process of preserving the profession has gone through many ups and downs, the salt farmers here still stick with it.
Currently, Bac Lieu has a total of more than 1,500 hectares of salt cultivation land, yielding nearly 80,000 tons in the 2024 crop season.
Although the salt area has now decreased a lot, Bac Lieu still maintains the position of the locality with the largest salt field area in the country.
According to many recorded documents, in the past, Bac Lieu was called “Salt Land” by people throughout the six provinces of the South. At that time, people did not call it Bac Lieu salt directly but attached to the salt grains the name “Ba Thac” - the name of a river mouth at the end of the Hau River with immense alluvium.
Later, people also called Bac Lieu salt Long Dien salt (because Long Dien has the largest salt production area and is the most famous in Bac Lieu).
