The project's governing body is the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The project will be implemented over 4 years from 2024 to 2027. The three selected localities are Quang Nam, Ha Giang, Dong Thap and can be expanded to Hue, Can Tho, and Hanoi.
Specifically, the project will support the development and implementation of policies at the central and provincial levels in sustainable tourism development. Capacity building for Vietnamese training institutions through the provision of high-quality training programs aimed at developing skills and expertise for human resources in the tourism and hospitality sector. Support local destinations and tourism businesses in investing in and operating sustainable tourism.
The ST4SD project consists of three parts: plan implementation, master planning, and policies and decisions on sustainable tourism development.
The first part will strengthen public-private dialogue mechanisms at the national, regional and provincial levels; build a set of Vietnam tourism development indicators to increase competitiveness.
The second part provides high quality training programs, aiming at developing skills and expertise for human resources in the tourism and hospitality sector.
The third part is to support destinations with ideas on sustainable tourism development as well as raise business awareness of sustainability standards.
In recent times, ST4SD has actively supported Quang Nam in developing green tourism and sustainable tourism; helping Quang Nam become the first locality in the country to issue a set of provincial-level green tourism criteria.
