Schools and teachers are indifferent when students have accidents during physical education class?

(NLDO)- Relatives of a student at Phan Van Sang High School (Hoc Mon - Ho Chi Minh City) reported that the student had an accident while doing physical education but the school was indifferent.

Since March 17, on many forums for parents and students in Ho Chi Minh City, a post has been circulating about a student who had an accident during a physical education class. This post also reflects that after the accident, the school and teachers were indifferent and insensitive to the student, even though the student’s family was facing many difficulties.

Specifically, the post reflects as follows: "In Mr. H's physical education class, he made my sister jump over the rope even though this exercise was not in the curriculum. When jumping, there was no cushion underneath and no momentum while my sister was only 1m53 tall. When my sister jumped over the rope the first time, she was able to jump over it, but the second time she was higher and made her jump over it again. As a result, my sister jumped over it but landed in the wrong position, dislocated her knee and tore her ligament. Then her knee dislocated and shifted to one side. At that time, the school called an ambulance to the hospital, and she was hospitalized for 10 days. During that time in the hospital, it affected my sister's studies and my family had to take time off work to take care of her. Mr. H also visited and gave her 500,000 VND and 2 cartons of milk, while the homeroom teacher, Mr. D., was indifferent and did not care about my sister, did not visit and did not text or call to ask about her. At first, the school advanced 1 million VND for the hospital bill, but then had to beg, wait a long time to transfer 2 million to cover hospital fees and from here on deny all responsibility. My family went up to talk: Why did you let my child practice jumping and landing without a mattress and this exercise is not in the school's lesson, the school principal just said it was an unexpected incident, the school did not cause it, denying all responsibility... Currently my brother is having ligament surgery, the cost is unknown but could be up to tens of millions, and the school only supported 3 million and denied all responsibility....".

What does the school say?

In the minutes of the meeting on March 18 between the leaders of Phan Van Sang High School, the parents of HM (the student who had the accident) and the teachers involved, Ms. Le Thi Thanh Thuy - Principal of Pham Van Sang High School (Hoc Mon district) confirmed that there was an incident in which a student had an accident during a physical education class as reported on social networks, but from February 2025.

According to Ms. Le Thi Thanh Thuy, immediately after receiving information from social networks, on March 18, the school invited the parents of student HM to work.

As a result of the meeting, the school principal said that the person who posted this information on social media was the real brother of student HM, but the information was not accurate.

Specifically, on February 14, M.'s mother went to the school to meet the principal and explain the incident that M. encountered. At that time, the principal asked the parents to send all of M.'s case files back to the school. When the incident occurred, the school's medical staff gave first aid to M. and took her to the hospital. On February 24, when the student's records were complete, the school supported the student with 3 million VND in expenses, transferred to M.'s brother's account.

When the parents mentioned that the surgery would cost about 25 million VND, the principal confirmed that the school would cover part of the cost, and the rest would be supported by donors.

During the meeting on March 18, M.'s parents confirmed to the school that teacher D. called to check on the student, and teacher H., a physical education teacher, went to the hospital to visit and take care of the student.

According to Mr. H.'s presentation at the above meeting, at the beginning of the physical education period when the incident with student M. occurred, he checked the health of all the students in the class. Two students asked not to practice, but the rest practiced normally.

According to the school representative, Mr. H. apologized to the parents and student M., and also visited the student in the hospital. At the meeting on March 18, Mr. H. also asked to learn from the student's experience in this incident...

Regarding the subject that is not in the curriculum but students are required to practice, Ms. Le Thi Thanh Thuy informed that this student studies badminton, before studying, the teacher requires warm-up and movement exercises, and this is one of the warm-up movements for the students.

Also according to the minutes of the meeting on March 18, Ms. Le Thi Thanh Thuy apologized to the family and sent 7.6 million VND to support the cost for the student to have immediate surgery.
