Thuy Bieu Village, Thuy Bieu Ward, has implemented a pilot model, the first plastic-reducing tourist destination in Hue City (Thua Thien Hue Province). The village currently has 15 community facilities participating and implementing plastic-reducing solutions. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own personal items, and if they do not bring their own water bottles, they will be provided with water bottles and refilled at 5 free water stations.
In addition, raincoats and umbrellas are also provided on bicycles. For the tour program with cooking class experience, shopping bags and food containers are provided so that visitors can go to the market without using plastic bags. In the accommodation rooms, glass water bottles replace plastic bottles, and shampoo bags are replaced with reusable bottles. Thuy Bieu village has increased the arrangement of trash cans for visitors to dispose of waste properly and conveniently for collection.
According to Mr. Tran Quang Hao - Head of Community Tourism, Thua Thien Hue Tourism Association, the changes of Thuy Bieu destination are the initial results of the components of the agreement, support from the Project "Hue - Plastic Reduction City in Central Vietnam, Vietnam" contributing to making Hue a plastic reduction city by 2024".
“It is the tourists who have the need for this plastic reduction tour. From there, people participate with all their heart and with all their expectations. Those two perceptions meet, so people feel excited and determined to do it together,” said Mr. Tran Quang Hao.
With the support of the Project “Hue - Plastic-reducing City in Central Vietnam”, Thua Thien Hue Tourism Association has implemented many activities to reduce single-use plastics arising from tourism activities from hotels, travel agencies and community tourism sites in Hue city. After one year of implementation, many hotels, travel agencies and communities have proposed plans to reduce the use of single-use plastics in business activities with the 6T principle (Refuse - Reduce - Reuse - Replace - Recycle - Collect).
Ms. Do Thi Ai My, a service staff at Imperial Hue Hotel, said that the awareness of tourism businesses and individuals providing services has changed significantly. “Because I work in the service industry and come into contact with many customers, I am also aware of reducing plastic waste for the environment. For example, the spa will use things like woven slippers and sedge mats for reuse. The hotel also uses rice straws to reduce plastic waste for the environment.”
To date, in Thua Thien Hue province, there are 22 hotels and units, accounting for 70% of the members of the Thua Thien Hue Hotel Association, committed to implementing at least one practice of reducing single-use plastic products. Many environmentally friendly products are used such as: bamboo charcoal pens, recycled bottled water, bio-plastics, collection points, waste classification, etc.
Ms. Chau Thi Hoang Mai, Executive Director of Alba Hue Hotel said: "We hope that these activities will spread more widely, making the tourism community of Thua Thien Hue pay more and more attention to reducing single-use plastic waste."
Since August 2023, the Thua Thien Hue Tourism Association has organized training sessions to raise awareness about plastic waste reduction for 120 members including hotels, travel agencies and community tourism sites. The members of the Association agreed on the urgency of implementing activities to reduce the use of plastic products; identified the types of plastic products being used at the unit, some basic methods that can be applied to implement plastic reduction activities and committed to organizing and implementing plastic reduction activities at the unit according to the general plan of the Thua Thien Hue tourism industry in the coming time.
Ms. Nguyen Hoang Thuy Vy, Vice President of Thua Thien Hue Tourism Association said: "We hope that in the next stages, other units, in addition to the pioneering units, will have better models and initiatives and will replicate these activities, not only in a small field but in all general operations."
Possessing heritages recognized by UNESCO, Hue is also an ASEAN Cultural City, an ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable City and was awarded a certificate of recognition by WWF as an ASEAN Green City in 2024. The tourism industry of Thua Thien Hue province is striving to build an increasingly green - clean - bright, environmentally friendly and attractive tourism environment in Hue to attract tourists.
VOV.VN - Quang Nam province is the first locality in the country to issue and implement the Green Tourism Criteria. Many specific models aiming at developing green tourism have been applied in Hoi An and other localities in the province.
