Accordingly, the ST4SD project supports the implementation of action plans and strengthens public-private dialogue at both national and local levels; develops a new Swiss Executive Hospitality Training program at Vietnamese training institutions that meets standards; and establishes a network of sustainable tourism experts, including both Swiss and local experts. At the same time, it promotes innovative ideas for businesses and destinations to enhance sustainability, including the introduction of sustainability standards. The project is implemented with the advice and participation of two leading Swiss universities, the School of Business and Tourism Management (EHL) and the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU).

Through the project, the Swiss Government has committed to provide non-refundable support of CHF 3.6 million (about more than VND 101 billion) from ODA capital to implement the ST4SD project. The ST4SD project's managing agency is the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism is assigned to be the project owner. The project is implemented by the sponsor itself. Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation is the unit selected to implement the project.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of leaders of several provinces: Ha Giang, Quang Nam and Dong Thap; representatives of training institutions and a number of tourism experts. Within the framework of the event, Swiss Ambassador Thomas Gass and Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Ha Van Sieu signed a Letter of Exchange, affirming the commitment to provide and receive non-refundable official development assistance (ODA) capital, marking the official start of the project. The project is implemented to promote the recovery of Vietnam's tourism industry after the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as support in addressing challenges of the tourism industry, towards sustainable tourism development.

In 2024, Vietnam's tourism industry will have impressive results. Total revenue from tourists is estimated at about VND 840 trillion, up 23.8% over the same period in 2023. Specifically, the total number of international tourists to Vietnam is estimated at over 17.5 million and the total number of domestic tourists is estimated at 110 million; up 38.9% and 1.6% over the same period in 2023.

According to the Vietnam Tourism Development Strategy to 2030, tourism is a key industry that not only supports other economic sectors but also improves livelihoods. However, Vietnam's tourism industry is facing challenges in the development process such as environmental pollution, tourist overload at some destinations, and ineffective sustainable destination management in some localities. Therefore, Vietnam's tourism industry needs to further strengthen sustainable practices for businesses and tourist destinations in the coming time.
