While searching for a "girlfriend" and stranded in Con Dao, a wild animal weighing up to 65kg was rescued.

Specifically, information from Con Dao National Park shows that at 6:00 p.m. today, August 17, 2024, authorities and tourists successfully rescued and released a male turtle weighing about 65 kg into the sea at Lo Voi beach area.

Previously, while participating in a sea turtle run organized by a hotel in Con Dao, a group of runners discovered a stranded green turtle and reported it to the Con Dao National Park Management Board.

Immediately after that, the Mobile Ranger Station of Con Dao National Park went to Lo Voi beach area with runners to successfully rescue the green turtle and release it back to the sea.

The green turtle was said to be on its way to find a "girlfriend" and got stranded.

It is known that every year, from April to November, sea turtles enter the breeding season and the beaches of Con Dao National Park become giant nesting grounds, hundreds of sea turtles come to these grounds to lay eggs and maintain their species.

According to statistics from the Con Dao National Park Management Board, in 2023, the unit rescued and relocated 2,262 egg nests, with a total of 217,257 eggs, to incubation lakes; the number of hatched turtle nests was 2,159. The number of hatched turtles that lived, moved, and were released back to the sea under control was 166,177 individuals.

The unit has tagged 441 turtles and monitored the tagged mother turtles... On average, each tagged mother turtle lays about 2.96±1.93 nests/year, with a maximum of 8 nests/year. It is estimated that in 2023, about 765 mother turtles will return to Con Dao waters to lay eggs.

In 2024, statistics from January 1 to April 15 showed that 65 sea turtle nests were successfully laid on the beach, 13 mother turtles were tagged, 65 nests were hatched, and 3,374 baby turtles were released back into the sea under control.

On average, each year recently, Con Dao National Park rescues over 1,500 sea turtle egg nests, conducts artificial hatching and releases over 150,000 baby turtles back into the sea.

This is an extremely important activity in the conservation of endangered and rare animals listed in the World Red Book, highly appreciated by domestic and international nature conservation organizations.
