TPO - On September 16, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Binh Dinh province announced that it had decided to award certificates of merit to collectives and individuals with achievements in the work of protecting and conserving sea turtles.
According to the Fisheries Sub-Department under the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Dinh, in March, July, and August, three fishermen fishing for tuna in Hoai Nhon town (Binh Dinh) encountered sea turtles entangled in their nets and hooks while fishing at sea. They rescued and released three sea turtles (one green turtle, one hawksbill turtle, and one hawksbill turtle) back into the ocean.

Specifically, in March 2024, fishing boat BD-97388-TS of Mr. Vo Hoai Tam (born in 1979, Tam Quan Bac ward, Hoai Nhon town) rescued a hawksbill sea turtle weighing 6kg, 0.7m long that was caught in the net and released it back to the sea.
In July 2024, fishing boat BD-98485-TS of Mr. Huynh Anh Tuan (born in 1986, Tam Quan Nam ward, Hoai Nhon town) released a turtle about 0.8m long and weighing about 7kg that was caught on a hook back into the sea.
Then in August, fishing boat BD-97417-TS of Mr. Le Van Hoi (born 1991, Tam Quan Nam ward, Hoai Nhon town) rescued a hawksbill turtle about 0.7m long and weighing 25kg that was caught in a trawl net and released it back to the sea.
The three fishermen mentioned above were awarded certificates of merit by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Dinh province for their achievements in protecting and conserving sea turtles, contributing to the conservation of rare and endangered animals in need of conservation in Vietnam.
According to the Department of Fisheries of Binh Dinh province, the rescue of sea turtles and their release into the ocean demonstrated the spirit of self-awareness, understanding and enforcement of State laws in the work of protecting rare animals and protecting aquatic resources of fishermen.
Recently, during a 16-day fishing trip, fisherman Huynh Minh Toan in Tam Quan Nam ward (Hoai Nhon town), captain of fishing boat BD-99095-TS, encountered a sea turtle caught in a net floating at sea.
Having attended many training courses on sea turtle identification and sea turtle rescue methods organized by the Department of Fisheries before, Mr. Toan easily recognized that this was a hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), a "critically endangered" species according to the classification of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), so he rescued and released it back into the sea.
To avoid sea turtles getting entangled in the net again, Mr. Toan collected all the nets and brought them back to shore. The Binh Dinh Fisheries Department is proposing to reward fisherman Huynh Minh Toan.
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Binh Dinh province also decided to award certificates of merit to the Community Group for protecting aquatic resources of Nhon Hai and Nhon Chau communes for the above achievements.
Also according to the Binh Dinh Fisheries Department, in less than 3 months (from May 21 to August 14), there were 9 sea turtles (green turtles), one of the 5 rare sea turtle species in Vietnam, laying 9 nests of eggs with about 900 eggs on the coastal beach in Quy Nhon (7 nests in Nhon Hai commune and 2 nests in Nhon Chau commune).
Local aquatic resource protection communities directly monitor, supervise and protect sea turtle nesting grounds. Some sea turtle egg nests are laid close to the water’s edge and are easily swept away by high tides, so they are moved to a safe place. The hatchlings are supported and protected as they return to the sea.
