Yen Bai - Born in a poor mountainous area, growing up in difficult family circumstances, Mong ethnic youth are finding their own way to start a business in their homeland despite many difficulties.

Sung A Dau, 27 years old, is a Mong youth born and raised in Lang Ca village, Cat Thinh commune, Van Chan district. This is the village with the second highest poverty rate in the commune, with no concrete roads or electricity. That is probably one of the reasons why the Mong people here are still poor. Wanting to escape this situation, A Dau thought he needed to find a way to start a business, create income, and not just grow rice and corn to have enough to eat like he is doing now.

Thinking is doing, A Dau learned about forestry trees because her parents' hill land was empty. Cinnamon, bodhi, and tung tree were chosen by A Dau. Every year, the money from selling pigs, chickens, or harvesting bamboo shoots is saved by A Dau to buy seedlings, then diligently plant and take care of them. Saving little by little, now A Dau's family has 5 hectares of hills; of which, cinnamon trees are 3 hectares, the rest are tung tree and bodhi. To create short-term income to support long-term, since 2020, A Dau has boldly introduced Taiwanese guava trees to plant on Lang Ca land.

A Dau shared: "This land is loose and moist, so when planting corn, the corn will germinate quickly, oranges are susceptible to disease, and longan does not like the climate, so previous experimental models all failed. But I did not give up, and continued to look for other varieties to convert. By chance, I learned about Taiwanese guava, researched and learned about planting and care techniques on the Internet and saw the potential, so I planted 90 guava trees on a trial basis. In addition, I also planted Thai jackfruit and cardamom."

Not letting down the efforts, after 6 months the tree bore fruit, although small but sweet and fragrant. Up to now, the perseverance and hard work have initially paid off. A Dau has a cinnamon hill that is nearly 10 years old, a 4-year-old betel and bodhi hill and a 3-year-old guava garden that is regularly bearing fruit every day.

Determined to start a business in his hometown, 24-year-old Giang A Thanh in Dao Xa village, Kim Noi commune, Mu Cang Chai district chose the Tran Mong cymbidium orchid as his career path. Growing orchids, the first and most difficult thing is to make the orchids bloom in the right season for consumption, requiring techniques and experience from the grower. Realizing that, A Thanh has researched for a long time and also spent a lot of time experimenting despite many failures.

A Thanh shared: "To make orchids bloom in season, the plants grow healthily and are free from pests and diseases, I am very careful from the stage of preparing the soil and seedlings to the process of planting and caring for the plants. After many failures, I have also learned from my own experience about the timing of watering, spraying, stimulating and slowing down the flowers so that the flowers bloom in time for the Lunar New Year when the flower market has the highest demand."

Knowing that the consumption demand in the district is not large, A Thanh also proactively introduces and offers products for sale on social networks. Thanks to the sharing of the community, especially the fanpage of the Youth Union, A Thanh's orchid garden is becoming more and more known.

On the occasion of Tet 2023, A Thanh sold nearly 200 pots to the market, mainly through this online channel, earning 60 million VND. Currently, Thanh has more than 400 pots of cymbidium orchids in the garden and is continuing to expand the scale, promising that this year's Tet crop will be even more successful.

Diligence, creativity, daring to think, daring to do, and determination to overcome difficulties are common characteristics of many ethnic minority youth in general and Mong youth in particular. Starting a business in any field has its difficulties and challenges, but for Mong people it is even more difficult because of the high mountainous terrain, harsh climate, the idea of self-sufficiency has become a rut, and rural infrastructure is still lacking.

However, above all, the Mong youth have demonstrated their enthusiasm and determination to succeed; some of the impressive successes include: Young Director of Hello Mu Cang Chai Trade and Tourism Co., Ltd. Giang A De with a community tourism model that brings in a stable income of 30 million VND/month. Director of Hmong 4S Vietnam Co., Ltd. Lao A Cu has turned Mong costumes into a business item...

And there are many young Mong people who are gradually laying solid foundations on the path of starting a business, even if it is simply farming. Each idea, each step on the journey ahead is full of obstacles and challenges, but they dare to think, dare to do, dare to face to gradually assert themselves and inspire their fellow countrymen and the community.
