(CLO) According to reports, US President Donald Trump may meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia later this month. Officials from each country will meet this week to finalize the details.

Last week, Saudi Arabia expressed its desire to host a summit between Trump and Putin, inviting parties from the US, Ukraine and Russia to the capital Riyadh to discuss ways to end the conflict that began in February 2022.

Mr Trump has also said he “may” meet Mr Putin in the kingdom “in the not too distant future”. Meanwhile, Bloomberg news agency said on Sunday that the meeting could take place before the end of the month.

The US and Russia are currently finalising the details, but Bloomberg, citing an unnamed official, reported that most European officials had not been briefed on the meeting. However, Mr Trump had hinted last week that Ukraine would attend the meeting.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a live interview on NBC News that he "will never accept any decision between the United States and Russia on Ukraine. Never."

“There is no leader in the world who can really reach an agreement with Putin without involving us,” he added.

In his latest remarks at the Daytona 500 event, Mr. Trump also said: "I think he [Putin] wants to stop fighting. We talked long and hard.... I think he wants to stop fighting." He added about President Zelenskyy's participation: "He will participate, yes."

"One way or another, of course Ukraine will participate in the negotiations. There will be a bilateral dialogue between Russia and the United States, and a dialogue regarding Ukraine's participation," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian state television on Thursday.

"The Kingdom welcomes the hosting of the summit in Saudi Arabia and reaffirms ongoing efforts to achieve lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine," the Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
