US President Donald Trump has offered advice to former presidential rival Kamala Harris as the former vice president is rumoured to run for governor next year.
"Let her run. I don't want to give political advice to other people but one thing she should do is she should start doing interviews. During Covid, he (former President Joe Biden) did not do any interviews and he avoided them because of Covid," President Trump said on Air Force One on March 23, according to Fox News.
Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris shook hands before the debate in September 2024.
Mr Biden and Ms Harris have not commented on the statement. The advice comes amid speculation in the US media that Ms Harris is seriously considering running for governor of California in next year's midterm elections. The former US vice president is expected to make a decision before the end of this summer.
Current California Governor Gavin Newsom is considered a potential Democratic presidential candidate for the 2028 election. Mr. Newsom is term-limited and cannot run for re-election in 2026, opening up opportunities for many candidates wishing to sit in the highest executive seat in the state.
CBS News quoted a former adviser to Ms. Harris as saying that the former vice president would be well-suited for the position thanks to his experience at both the state and federal levels.
However, there are some doubts about Ms. Harris, especially in light of accusations that she deliberately avoids interviews.
According to Fox News, after Mr. Biden withdrew from the race last year and immediately endorsed Ms. Harris, the former vice president then went 39 days without doing any interviews, before participating once with his running mate, Mr. Tim Walz, on August 29, 2024. After that, she participated in more interviews but was said to have avoided difficult questions.
Some Democrats have criticized Harris for not appearing on Joe Rogan’s popular podcast. According to Fox News, Rogan said Harris’s team had set conditions on what questions the host could ask.
Mr Trump did appear on the show, and Mr Rogan later endorsed the Republican candidate's campaign.
