“Hung Yen egg lychee has thick flesh, sweet flesh, and the fruit is as big as a chicken egg, or even bigger. When the lychee is ripe, sometimes even with money, you can’t buy egg lychee,” Mr. Vu Hong Ngan, a billionaire from Hung Yen who grows specialty egg lychee in Quang Hung commune, Phu Cu district - the king of egg lychee in Hung Yen, affirmed.

Hung Yen egg lychee tree originates from Phan Sao Nam commune, Phu Cu district. Suitable for the soil and climate, this lychee variety when grown in Hung Yen, especially in Phu Cu district, will produce sweet and fragrant lychees, thin skin, bright red color, with a size that can be as big as an egg.

Hung Yen lychee is popular in the market. During harvest season, Hung Yen lychee is sold at 180,000 - 200,000 VND/kg, sometimes up to 500,000 VND/kg but there is no sale.

With high economic value, Hung Yen lychee is expanding its cultivation area. Not only Phan Sao Nam commune but also in neighboring communes, many households have expanded their lychee planting scale, building the Hung Yen lychee specialty brand in the market.

Among them, we must mention farmer Vu Hong Ngan, known as the King of Hung Yen lychee, who owns the largest lychee farm in Quang Hung commune (Phu Cu district, Hung Yen province).

Planting 1,800 lychee trees to become a billionaire in Hung Yen

At the age of over 60, Mr. Vu Hong Ngan has tanned skin, a kind appearance and a bright smile. With 10 years of experience growing Hung Yen lychee trees, Mr. Ngan has understood the characteristics of this specialty tree.

Recalling the reason for deciding to grow lychee, Mr. Ngan confided: "I have been farming for many years but before that I only grew oranges, grapefruits, and lychees. In 2015, I learned about lychee through the Farmers' Association and the Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute. Seeing that lychee also sells for a good price and has a lot of potential for development, my family switched to growing lychee.

Initially, Mr. Ngan's family converted 9 sao of agricultural land to grow lychee. Gradually, seeing that lychee grew well, he expanded the growing area to 20 mau (nearly 8 hectares) with 1,800 lychee trees.

In addition, to ensure supply to the market, Mr. Ngan proactively cooperated with 30 households to expand the total area of planting this specialty lychee variety to 11 hectares.

With proper fertilization techniques, Hung Yen lychee fruit of Mr. Ngan's farm is loved for its large, round, delicious, crispy, dry flesh, beautiful appearance; no waterlogging or burnt skin. Sharing the secret to achieving such good and consistent quality, Mr. Ngan said that the secret lies in the way of fertilization.

According to Mr. Ngan, when harvested, egg lychee fruit is 2-3 times larger than normal lychee. To achieve the above size, the egg lychee tree must be fertilized with enough nutrients.

He has encountered many cases where farmers are so greedy for fruit that they leave a lot of fruit, but do not know how to take care of it, so the harvested fruit is only as small as lychee and cannot be sold for a good price.

The secret to producing Hung Yen's specialty lychee lies in the way it is fertilized. If fertilized with the right amount, Hung Yen lychee will be large and round when harvested, delicious, crispy, with dry flesh and beautiful appearance. Photo: Vu Ly.

"If you fertilize too little, the fruit will be small, but if you fertilize too much, the fruit will not taste good. From many years of experience growing lychee, I have noticed that if you fertilize too much, the fruit will often be soft, have thin skin, and will easily burn in strong sunlight," said Mr. Ngan.

To overcome this, his family is using foreign organic fertilizers, foliar fertilization to adjust the plant's nutrition. Using it properly, his lychee tree has few pests, thick and small leaves, good fruit, even and beautiful appearance.

Many households around the farm have been transferred the process and techniques of taking care of lychee trees by him. For households in difficult circumstances, he is willing to support them with fertilizer and farming materials.

Every year, Mr. Ngan's family harvests 7-10 tons of lychee. During the harvest season, the price of lychee at Mr. Ngan's house remains stable at 200,000 VND/kg of Hung Yen lychee. The lychee farm generates revenue of 2-3 billion VND, with a profit of 1-1.5 billion VND per year.

Building a brand for specialty fruits

Talking about the decision to build the Hung Yen Lychee King brand, Mr. Ngan confided: My family's farm grows lychee on a large scale.

Around me, there are also many households in the commune that are growing this variety of tree. Thus, the yield in this area, if bumper, can be up to 5-70 tons. If there is input, there must be output. To sell the product at a good price, we must build a brand in the market.

Mr. Ngan affirmed that in building a brand, the most important factor is product quality. Nearly 8 hectares of Hung Yen lychee have been cultivated by Mr. Ngan according to VietGAP and organic processes.

Lychee trees are properly cared for so the lychee fruit when harvested has a delicious flavor and a beautiful, uniform appearance.

Mr. Ngan sent Hung Yen lychee fruit from the farm for quality inspection to register for trademark protection and product certification.

In 2023, Hung Yen lychee products produced by Mr. Vu Hong Ngan's family were granted 3-star OCOP certification. In 2024, the Ministry of Science and Technology granted the exclusive trademark "King of Lychee Eggs" to Mr. Vu Hong Ngan.

To develop the lychee egg brand and Hung Yen Lychee Egg King, Mr. Ngan invested in designing beautiful packaging and images. In addition, he actively participated in fairs and exhibitions in many provinces and cities across the country to promote this Hung Yen specialty fruit.

Many people after trying Hung Yen lychee from Mr. Ngan’s farm have become his regular customers. Some people come back and order 50, even 200 boxes of 5kg lychee.

Ms. Minh Ngoc (Hanoi) shared: I had the chance to try Mr. Ngan's Hung Yen egg lychee at the agricultural market, a regional specialty. The egg lychee has a very delicious and special flavor, so for the past few years I have been ordering it as a gift.

The price of lychee here is higher than the general level but the quality is equivalent. What's more, from the beginning of the season to the end of the season, although the market price sometimes reached 500,000 VND/kg of Hung Yen lychee, the lychee here still kept the price of 200,000 VND/kg."
