Speaking about the plan to relocate and clear houses on and along canals at a press conference this afternoon (October 24), Mr. Ly Thanh Long - Chief of Office of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction said that so far the city has compensated and relocated 1,149 houses out of a total of 6,500 houses in the 2021-2025 period.

According to the current capital arrangement plan, by the end of 2025, it is expected that compensation and relocation will be completed for 5,102 houses, focusing on the Xuyen Tam canal project with 2,215 houses.

However, the city budget is currently only balanced for transitional projects, projects under construction and some urgent key projects with priority for investment, limiting capital allocation for projects without clean land or projects with many problems in compensation, affecting the progress of implementation and completion in the period of 2021-2025.

The Department of Construction is proposing that the City People's Committee assign the Department of Planning and Investment to consider and supplement capital allocation to carry out investment preparation tasks and carry out site clearance compensation for 3 projects not yet included in the 2021-2025 medium-term public investment capital plan.

These are the Hy Vong Canal renovation project (Tan Binh District); the Van Thanh Canal dredging and renovation project (Binh Thanh District); the Te Canal infrastructure construction and environmental improvement project (District 4).

“If the City People's Committee approves the above 3 projects to be added to the medium-term public investment capital plan and allocates capital to carry out compensation and site clearance, the total number of houses to be relocated on and along rivers, canals and ditches in the 2021-2025 period will increase to 6,906 units,” said Mr. Long.
