Preschool education - the mission revolves around 8 words

Referring to the mission of preschool education with 3 contents: "nurture - care - education", Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thi Kim Chi said that with preschool education, starting from 6 months to 5 years old, the greatest wish of grandparents and parents is that their children are well nurtured and cared for.

For preschoolers, proper nutrition and appropriate exercise are most important.
For preschoolers, proper nutrition and appropriate exercise are most important.

“Education and learning are lifelong, but nurturing and caring - the first foundation for children's physical health and well-being - cannot be redone if the golden period is passed,” Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Chi emphasized.

Affirming the extremely important position of preschool education, the Deputy Minister of Education and Training summarized a brief message which is also the core content, the largest professional part of preschool education, which is: proper nutrition and appropriate exercise. Specifically, if children want to develop comprehensively, it is necessary to ensure that they follow the nutritional pyramid, have enough minerals and micronutrients in their meals. Along with that, children must be able to exercise their hands, feet, mind, and soul through talking, singing, confiding, etc. One thing to note is that whether it is nutrition or exercise, it needs to be suitable for the physical condition of each child and each region.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Chi emotionally recounted her experiences of visiting preschools in mountainous ethnic minority areas and truly saw how hard it was for preschool teachers there.

“I once visited a school with 80 children and only 2 teachers. Parents here almost delegate all the childcare work to the teachers. The teachers have to coax the children to go to school, so they always have candy in their bags; they have to have scissors to cut hair, and nail clippers for the children; they have to save money to buy sandals for the children because in the mountains, students do not have the habit of wearing sandals. To have lunch, parents can only pay for seasonal agricultural products but do not have money, so the teachers have to grow vegetables, raise chickens, and raise pigs to improve the meals; at the same time, they ask benefactors to donate pots, pans, and dishes to organize a kitchen for the students,” the Deputy Minister said.

The Deputy Minister of Education and Training will always remember a tearful memory. “When I arrived at the school, I asked to take a photo with the students and teachers. The teachers ran in to take a photo, but two of them were barefoot. Thinking that she had forgotten, I reminded her to put on shoes and sandals. She innocently replied, “I’m used to walking barefoot, I can run fast when I walk barefoot.” It turned out that the teachers’ work was too busy: after picking up the children in the morning, they would feed the pigs and chickens; then they would go back to prepare the food… Preschool teachers in remote areas, why do they love their students so much, like their own children? It’s because most of them come from the lowlands, and their children are left with their grandparents. Far away and missing their children, they would reach out to look for them at night but couldn’t find them. That longing was filled by their students. They love and care for their students like they would their own children,” the Deputy Minister emotionally expressed.

No passion, can't be a teacher

Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Chi said that teaching is both a job and a career. There have been many people who worked as teachers with low salaries and hard work, and had opportunities to change to other jobs with more leisurely and higher salaries, but they refused or changed and then returned because they loved the job and children so much. Every job is noble, but as the late Prime Minister Pham Van Dong said: "Teaching is the noblest of all noble jobs."

Understanding the hardships of the education sector in general and preschool education in particular, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thi Kim Chi suggested that in school management at the preschool level, on the one hand, it is necessary to be standardized, comply with regulations, rules, and school year guidelines, but there also needs to be more sharing because of all levels of education, this is the most difficult level; it should be considered the number 1 level of concern. Along with that, it is necessary to be proactive and flexible with administrative procedures, formulaic management measures, books, reports, lesson plans, etc. to reduce pressure on teachers.

In addition, it is necessary to continue to advise on policy mechanisms for education, including preschool education. “In addition to the general mechanism of the State and Government, with the position of the Capital - a place with developed economic conditions and many socialized resources, with a special mechanism, I hope that the leaders of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training and its affiliated units can issue support mechanisms to encourage preschool education; call on businesses and sponsors to provide additional support for teachers,” the Deputy Minister said.

The Deputy Minister also emphasized that the object of the teaching profession is to educate people. If there are good policies, even everything, but without responsibility and enthusiasm, it is impossible to do it. Therefore, teachers who love their profession should use their own enthusiasm and responsibility to try to overcome difficulties; believe that: The State, the Government, and ministries and branches always pay special attention to education and are making efforts and actively advising to make adjustments and supplements to policies and regimes to help teachers and staff working in the education sector have better conditions.

“The Ministry of Education and Training continues to advise the Government and the National Assembly to adjust and amend laws on education; in which it is strongly advising to promulgate the Law on Teachers. The Ministry of Education and Training also actively advises to promulgate many circulars and decrees to have a legal basis to help localities have a corridor to build appropriate policies and mechanisms to support and create favorable conditions for the education sector and for teachers,” affirmed Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thi Kim Chi.

Preschool education is currently undertaking an important task, which is to advise the Government to submit to the National Assembly (in 2025) two resolutions, including: Resolution on universalizing preschool education for 3-5 years old on the basis of universalizing preschool education for 5 years old and Resolution on the new Preschool Education Program. If these two resolutions are passed, it will be a major, comprehensive change for preschool education. At this time, the Department of Preschool Education (Ministry of Education and Training) is actively organizing many conferences, seminars, and discussions to solicit opinions from localities on the above two contents.
