Outstanding Young Face 2024: Trinh Thu Vinh and her fate with Shooting

Female shooter of the National Shooting Team Trinh Thu Vinh is a sports athlete honored in the 10 Outstanding Young Vietnamese Faces of 2024 - a prestigious award presented by the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union.

This is the first time Thu Vinh has been honored to receive this award.

Fate with Shooting

Trinh Thu Vinh was born on September 21, 2000, currently working at the People's Police Shooting Team and the National Shooting Team.

Unlike many of her teammates in the National Shooting Team, Trinh Thu Vinh came to this sport in a rather special way. She had a passion for athletics and won a number of awards in local competitions before being selected to join the People's Police Athletics Team. However, after a period of training and realizing that her performance was not improving, Vinh was suggested by her coaches to switch to shooting.

Trinh Thu Vinh shared: “At that time, I just thought that I had run out of luck with athletics and also wanted to experience a new sport. When I switched from athletics to shooting, I was a bit surprised. Because the two sports have completely opposite characteristics. Athletics is dynamic but shooting is static. A shooter not only needs a steady hand and a precise eye, but most importantly, he needs to maintain absolute calm during competition.”

Considered a top potential shooter of the People's Police Sports in particular and Vietnamese Shooting in general, Thu Vinh has soon achieved many achievements.

First were 2 individual and team Gold Medals; and at the same time set a national youth record at the 2018 National Youth Air Gun Championship, when she was only 18 years old.

In 2022, Thu Vinh continued to win the Gold Medal at the 9th National Sports Congress and then, at the 31st SEA Games in Hanoi, she excellently won 1 Silver medal and 1 Bronze medal.

The Pride of Vietnamese Shooting

2024 is a "shining" year for the girl from Thach Thanh, Thanh Hoa province, when she has a truly impressive record of achievements, with many international medals, certificates of merit and titles.

In January 2024, Thu Vinh won the Gold medal in the 10m mixed team event at the Asian Shooting Championship. But the name Trinh Thu Vinh only really became known in 2023 when she qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics after finishing 5th in the women's 10m individual air pistol event at the World Shooting Championship.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Thu Vinh continued to compete impressively. In just 5 days, she consecutively reached the finals of 2 events: women's 10m air pistol and 25m sport pistol.

Although she could not bring home an Olympic medal, becoming the first Vietnamese shooter after shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh to reach the finals at an Olympics still helped Thu Vinh top the poll for "Outstanding Athlete of 2024" organized by the Department of Physical Training and Sports (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism).

Previously, Thu Vinh was voted as a typical young police face in 2023 and received a Certificate of Merit from the Vietnam Women's Union in 2023.

When asked about becoming one of the 10 Outstanding Young Vietnamese Faces of 2024, female shooter Trinh Thu Vinh shared: “This will be a great source of motivation for me to continue to strive and contribute more. I hope that in the coming years I will still have the opportunity to complete all my goals, and who knows, I will receive such noble titles many more times. Every athlete strives to contribute and compete with all their might to complete their tasks in each tournament, achieve achievements and noble titles, and I am just luckier than you when I receive this award. Hopefully, those efforts and achievements can motivate and inspire young people to try harder, contribute more to help their families and society. So that the name Vietnam is mentioned proudly in the international arena, not only in the field of sports but in all fields.”

Thu Vinh also hopes to continue to invest in training and compete more to achieve better goals and achievements in international tournaments in the future.

According to Coach of the National Shooting Team Tran Quoc Cuong: Thu Vinh is a talented young athlete, with a very serious attitude towards training and competition. She always actively listens and adjusts herself to perfect her technique, tactics and mentality through each exercise.

At the beginning of 2025, Trinh Thu Vinh and his teammate, shooter Pham Quang Huy, won a Gold Medal at the 2025 Asian Shooting Cup (held in February, in Thailand) in the 10m mixed air pistol event.

At this tournament, the Vietnamese team ranked 4th overall with 3 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals, and 5 Bronze medals.

Previously in 2023, Thu Vinh's teammate, shooter Pham Quang Huy, was also honored to be on the list of 10 Outstanding Young Vietnamese Faces./.
