2 more cases progressed severely

On May 28, Mr. Thai Dinh Lam, Deputy Director of Nghe An Lung Hospital, said that there are 2 patients working at Chau Tien Company Limited (located in Nam Cam Industrial Park, Nghi Loc District, Nghe An) currently being treated at this hospital, including 1 patient who is on oxygen, in poor health and 1 patient with pneumoconiosis that has developed into tuberculosis. The other 3 patients are being treated at home.

According to the reporter's investigation, among the 8 workers with pneumoconiosis at Chau Tien Company Limited (3 of whom have died), 4 of whom are relatives (1 of whom has died).

Miserable because of being sick

At Nghe An Lung Hospital, for many months now, Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh (46 years old, residing in Nghi Hung commune, Nghi Loc district) has had to regularly be present at the hospital to take care of her husband, Mr. Hoang Van Son (47 years old, a patient with pneumoconiosis).

Ms. Binh said that Mr. Son had to be hospitalized for treatment at Nghe An Lung Hospital for nearly a year.

According to Ms. Binh, Mr. Son started working at Chau Tien Company Limited (specializing in producing stone powder) in 2019, mainly mixing stone powder and packaging. In June 2022, Mr. Son's health suddenly weakened and he had difficulty breathing, so he went to Nghe An Lung Hospital for examination and was diagnosed with pneumoconiosis.

After a period of treatment in Nghe An, Ms. Binh took her husband to the Central Lung Hospital for examination with the hope of having his lungs washed, but the doctors informed him that there was a thick layer of dust in Mr. Son's lungs, and his illness had become so severe that it could not be washed.

His family is near-poor, Mr. Son is the breadwinner. Now he is sick and spends a lot of money every month on treatment, making his family's life more and more miserable.

Ms. Binh said that working at the factory, Mr. Son was often exposed to dust but did not have adequate protective gear. "I asked him why he did not wear a mask, and he said the company did not provide one. Every time he went to work, I prepared many masks for him, but he still contracted this terrible disease," Ms. Binh sadly said.

In the same situation, the pneumoconiosis has turned into tuberculosis, making it difficult for Mr. Tran Ngoc Hoa (46 years old, living in Nghi Hung commune, Nghi Loc district) to move around, and he has to rely on his wife, Ms. Bui Thi Huong, to take care of him.

Ms. Huong said that Mr. Hoa started working at the stone powder processing factory of Chau Tien Company Limited since 2017. At the end of 2021, when he felt his health decline and coughed a lot, Mr. Hoa went to the hospital for examination and was diagnosed with pneumoconiosis.

Mr. Hoa went to Hanoi for treatment and lung lavage but had to return because his illness was too severe to be treated.

Ms. Huong is taking care of her husband at the hospital.

Since Mr. Hoa fell ill, Ms. Huong had to go to the hospital to take care of her husband. Her three children (one of whom is sick) had to be taken care of by relatives.

Among the 8 workers with pneumoconiosis, the youngest is Mr. Pham Quang Son (28 years old, residing in Nghi Thuan commune, Nghi Loc district). Mr. Son is being treated at home.

Comprehensive factory inspection

Mr. Bui Dinh Long, Vice Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee, has just signed a decision to establish an interdisciplinary inspection team to inspect Chau Tien Company Limited after 8 workers working at this stone powder processing factory suffered from pneumoconiosis, of which 3 died.

Nghe An Provincial People's Committee directed the interdisciplinary inspection team to investigate occupational diseases, inspect the working environment and implement social insurance policies for employees at Chau Tien Company Limited, with a maximum inspection period of 45 days.

Chau Tien Company Limited currently has 33 employees.

Mr. Le Tien Tri, Head of the Management Board of the Southeast Economic Zone (Nghe An), said that the interdisciplinary inspection team had inspected Chau Tien Company Limited and had no results yet.

Previously, the Southeast Economic Zone Management Board held a working session with the leaders of Chau Tien Company Limited with the participation of relevant departments and branches.

At this meeting, representatives of the participating agencies agreed to request Chau Tien Company Limited to visit and encourage 8 families of workers with pneumoconiosis, organize monitoring of the working environment, review workers who are subject to compulsory social insurance, and immediately implement insurance payment for workers.
