Baby NHLP (3 years old, living in Tan Binh district, Ho Chi Minh City) was taken to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City with a fever of 39 degrees Celsius, coughing, crying, and not eating for 3 days.
Taking a medical history, baby P. often has sore throat and runny nose. He often stays in an air-conditioned room at school and home; at night he sleeps in an air-conditioned room at about 22 degrees Celsius. For a week now, he has had the above symptoms but taking medicine has not helped.

The symptoms appeared a week ago, when the child went swimming and came home and immediately went into an air-conditioned room with a temperature of 18 degrees Celsius.
After that, the more the baby lay in the air conditioner, the more he coughed and the more his throat hurt, but when the air conditioner was turned off, the baby could not stand it and cried. The habit of sleeping with your mouth open increases the risk of sore throat.
Master - Doctor CKI Truong Tan Phat, ENT Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, explained that hot weather causes high temperatures, people tend to use air conditioners continuously, all day long, keep the room temperature around 17-20 degrees Celsius or let cold air blow directly on the face, neck, and back of the neck. This seriously affects the respiratory system.
To prevent sore throat in hot weather, if using air conditioning, do not set the temperature below 26 degrees Celsius.
When using air conditioning, the doors are closed, the cold air is a condition for bacteria to grow. The cold environment also causes the nasal and throat mucosa to dry, the body's resistance is weakened, and the body temperature is reduced. These factors are opportunities for bacteria and viruses to attack the throat mucosa. For people who are sick, their resistance is weak, when attacked by bacteria and viruses, the throat mucosa will be damaged more, the disease will not go away but will last longer.
In particular, the habit of sleeping with your mouth open in an air-conditioned room increases the risk of sore throat. When sleeping, the salivary glands are not enough to supply the throat, while the air conditioner dehumidifies the air, making the throat dry, sore and painful.
According to Dr. Phat, in addition to the habit of overusing air conditioners, there are other causes of sore throats in many people, such as drinking too many cold drinks or letting the fan blow directly on the person.
Hot weather, when using air conditioning, do not set the temperature below 26 degrees Celsius
Doctor Phat recommends that to prevent sore throat in hot weather, if using air conditioning, the temperature should not be below 26 degrees Celsius. The temperature of the air-conditioned room should be stable at around 26-28 degrees Celsius, the air conditioner should only be turned on from 11pm to around 3-4am the next morning. You should cover yourself with a thin blanket when sleeping at night, and clean the air conditioner 2-3 times a year. Families with small children should ensure the minimum temperature is 28 degrees Celsius.
In addition, everyone should clean their nose and throat daily with saline, drink enough water (2 liters/day), limit eating foods that are too cold, spicy, hot; limit smoking and drinking alcohol; wear a mask when leaving the house; limit going to places with a lot of dust and smoke.
