The child was consulted and transferred to the City Children's Hospital (HCMC). On May 27, specialist doctor 2 Nguyen Minh Tien, Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital, said that at the time of admission, the child was lethargic and pale, and chest X-ray showed diffuse damage to both lungs and collapsed lung apices. The child was diagnosed with severe pneumonia caused by influenza A/H1.
The child was treated intensively and has now recovered his health.
The child was treated intensively with high-parameter mechanical ventilation, prone position, broad-spectrum antibiotics, antiviral drugs, muscle relaxants, electrolyte and acid-base adjustment. The team consulted and performed ECMO intervention (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation).
The child's condition was complicated, showing signs of severe infection, fever, secondary pneumonia, high white blood cell count, and continued respiratory failure. Doctors changed antibiotics, adjusted ECMO parameters, and supported organ function.
After nearly 3 weeks of treatment, the child's health gradually improved. The child was taken off ECMO, then off the ventilator, and was alert and responsive.
Flu prevention recommendations
Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) recommends preventing flu with the following notes:
1. When you have symptoms such as cough, fever, runny nose, headache, fatigue, do not test yourself or buy medicine to treat yourself at home, but contact a medical facility for timely advice, examination and treatment.
2. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, preferably with a cloth or handkerchief or disposable tissue or your sleeve to reduce the spread of respiratory secretions into the surrounding environment.
3. Wear a mask when leaving the house, especially when you have signs of flu.
4. Wash your hands frequently with soap and clean water or hand sanitizer.
5. Do not spit in public places.
6. Limit contact with flu patients or suspected cases when not necessary.
7. Practice a healthy lifestyle, increase physical activity, and improve health.
