Many competitive advantages
Dak Nong has fertile basalt soil resources and a temperate tropical climate, which is very favorable for developing high-quality, large-scale agricultural production areas.
In recent years, Dak Nong has promoted solutions to increase the value of the agricultural sector. The movement to develop agricultural economy to meet standards and certifications has been strongly promoted by people, businesses, and cooperatives.
The scale of agricultural production in the province is increasingly expanding. The total agricultural cultivation area of the province is now over 309,397 hectares, double the area when the province was re-established. Of which, the area of industrial crops and perennial crops is over 235,200 hectares, and annual crops are nearly 74,000 hectares.
Dak Nong has successfully identified and built large-scale raw material areas for four key crops including coffee, pepper, rubber, and cashew. The province has developed many commercial-scale pig, cow, and poultry farms.
Dak Nong has developed 23 key products, strengths and potentials. The productivity and quality of agricultural products of the province have been significantly improved, gradually affirming its position in the domestic and international markets.
Among them, some crops have the largest area, yield and quality in the Central Highlands as well as the whole country. Typically, with pepper, Dak Nong currently has 34,000 hectares.
The average pepper yield of the whole province is about 2.4 tons/ha; the total annual output is about 70,000 tons. Dak Nong pepper ranks first in the Central Highlands and the whole country in terms of area, and second in output after Dak Lak province.
Or for coffee, Dak Nong has the third largest area in the Central Highlands, with 141,000 hectares, with an estimated output of 361,000 tons/year. Coffee is one of the province's main crops.
Up to now, the province has established a high-tech agricultural zone (HTZ) with an area of 120 hectares. Here, many businesses have come to invest in effective agricultural production models.
Dak Nong has recognized 7 high-tech agricultural zones, with a scale of over 3,500 hectares, including key crops such as pepper, coffee, and rice.
The province currently has 392 livestock farms, which have formed about 7 linkage chains to create stable product output, high economic efficiency, contributing to improving efficiency, reducing production costs and improving productivity and quality of agricultural products.
The One Commune One Product (OCOP) program is increasingly attracting investment interest from many entities. The province has 142 OCOP products with 3-4 stars from 111 enterprises, cooperatives, and production facility owners.
Low science and technology content
According to Mr. Pham Tuan Anh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, it can be said that the advances in science and technology in the province's agriculture have recorded some positive results.
But objectively speaking, only the stages of production, product creation, output and raw and fresh sales are the main ones. Meanwhile, the later stages, especially processing, packaging, creating brand stories and large-scale brands are still not strong.
Therefore, although the quality is assessed to be quite good, the overall competitiveness of agricultural products is still not high. This makes the sustainability of the agricultural economy poor, the lives of farmers are still precarious, and the selling price of agricultural products depends heavily on the market.
Meanwhile, as for coffee and pepper, the province's producers can completely dominate the market because they are the leaders in terms of scale and output.
Mr. Pham Tuan Anh also said that the underlying cause of this is that the province's agricultural production has not yet formed large-scale commodity linkages.
Because of the lack of concentration, it is difficult to apply science and technology synchronously in all stages, and the products made are more or less inconsistent in design and quality.
To overcome this, the agricultural sector is promoting coordination with relevant departments, sectors and localities to form industry chains linked to large-scale raw material production areas.
In particular, the chains apply more synchronously the processes and techniques of science and technology to facilitate enterprises inside and outside the province to develop deep processing factories and increase product value. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development promotes coordination with the Department of Science and Technology and related parties to increase the content of science and technology in agricultural practices.
Expect a new boost
Recognizing this issue, Vice Chairman of Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee Le Trong Yen said: Many agricultural and rural development sectors and industries are in need of investment from science and technology.
Specifically, the province's agricultural infrastructure is not synchronous, such as in transportation and irrigation. Investment resources and allocation for agricultural development, especially in the high-tech agricultural development area, are not commensurate and lack concentration.
Regarding solutions, the provincial leaders affirmed that Dak Nong focuses resources to encourage and support people, businesses, and cooperatives to promote agricultural economy applying science and technology, linking along value chains, especially for key products and strengths of the province.
Dak Nong considers developing a collective economy, with cooperatives as the core; in which, implementing innovation in the form of production and business organization, developing cooperative economy; promoting close linkages along value chains in concentrated production areas; strongly transforming from "agricultural supply chains" to developing "industry value chains".
Therefore, the province is focusing on directing the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and departments, branches and localities to build, perfect and implement specific mechanisms and policies to strengthen the development of high-tech agriculture and strongly apply science and technology in agriculture.
The province expects science and technology to create a breakthrough in the sustainable development of the agriculture and rural development sector. In particular, the province expects that science and technology will create a new impetus in the near future, waiting for new mechanisms and policies.
Dak Nong strives to form 25 more high-tech agricultural zones with concentrated production areas of over 10,000 hectares by 2030; by 2050, to form 35 high-tech agricultural zones with an area of over 14,300 hectares to serve as a driving force for agricultural development.
