As the owner of the largest nursery and supplier of acacia seedlings to the market in Hiep Duc district, in recent years, Mr. Duc has found that acacia trees are only suitable for mass planting, are prone to falling during the rainy and stormy season, are highly dependent on the consumer market, and are not very economically efficient.
Since then, Mr. Duc has been struggling to find and research new plant varieties to expand and provide for local people to plant, hoping to help them have a stable source of income.
Mr. Duc said that in 2023, his friends introduced him to the Aquilaria tree, which when grafted with agarwood will produce agarwood. The harvesting time is similar to that of acacia trees, but the cost is high, there is no fear of it falling, and it is adaptable to local climate and soil conditions.
From here, Mr. Duc went to China to learn and study the grafting method between these two types of trees. After acquiring knowledge, he bought 100 Ky Nam trees at 200,000 VND/tree, brought them back to try planting and grafting them with Do Bau trees in the nursery, and initially the nursery grew well.
To create effective agarwood, Mr. Duc grows the Aquilaria tree for about 2 years and cuts the embryo to graft it onto the Ky Nam tree. The grafted tree grows for about 5 years, he will drill holes into the trunk to let the tree heal and create agarwood essential oil and harvest after about 7 years.
“Compared to planting acacia, planting Aquilaria to create agarwood brings high economic value and does not worry about the consumer market because agarwood products can be classified and processed into many products such as ornamental agarwood, bracelets, essential oils for medicine... On average, each tree can produce about 0.5 - 1.5 kg of agarwood, bringing in an income of about 5 million VND/tree” - Mr. Duc shared.
Mr. Duc added that to limit the trees from falling during the rainy and stormy season, he has workers prune the branches of the Aquilaria trees. This type of tree not only produces agarwood but can also be exploited for by-products such as leaves to make tea to help prevent diabetes, blood fat, and waste products to make incense...
Currently, Mr. Duc is testing about 3,000 grafted dó bầu trees with ky nam on an area of about 0.5ha and selling about 1,000 seedlings to the market with prices ranging from 150,000 to 500,000 VND/tree.
In the coming time, he plans to expand the planting area to 2 hectares and continue to propagate to provide for local people to grow together and commit to consuming products after harvest.
[VIDEO] - Mr. Duc shares about grafting to create natural agarwood:
According to scientists, agarwood is produced from the Aquilaria tree, but not all Aquilaria species produce agarwood. Only Aquilaria species belonging to the Thymelaceae family can produce agarwood. Currently, there are 3 easily recognizable Aquilaria species: Aquilaria bau, Aquilaria me, and Aquilaria gach. Of these, the Aquilaria bau species of Vietnam produces the best agarwood in the world.
