VN-Index increased in the first session of the year, liquidity returned

The January 2 stock market session continued the upward trend of 2023. Right from the opening hour, the electronic trading board was covered in green. Just before lunchtime, the market fluctuated a bit, red appeared and then disappeared because of increasing demand.

By the end of the session, the heat gradually decreased but VN-Index still maintained its green color in the first session of the new year 2024. However, the joy was not complete when the market fell into a "green exterior, red heart" situation - the index increased but the number of stocks decreasing still exceeded the number of stocks increasing.

Closing the stock market session on January 2, VN-Index increased by 1.79 points, equivalent to 0.16% to 1,131.72 points. Liquidity improved slightly and stood at an average level. More than 842 million shares, equivalent to 17,111 billion VND, were successfully transferred.

In the stock market session on January 2, 2024, liquidity gradually returned to stocks, but the highlight of the VN-Index was that electricity stocks were racing to plummet, with two codes related to Mr. Duc shining. Illustrative photo

Only 197 codes increased in price (12 codes hit the ceiling), 77 codes remained unchanged and 299 codes decreased in price.

At the close of the stock market session on January 2, the VN30-Index only increased by 0.18 points, equivalent to 0.02% to 1,131.64 points. There were 215 million shares, equivalent to VND5,830 billion, traded. VN30 recorded 14 stocks increasing in price, 1 stock remaining unchanged, and 15 stocks decreasing in price.

The Hanoi Stock Exchange was less fortunate as the indices started in the green but quickly sank into the red. From around 11am, strong selling pressure caused the HNX-Index and HNX30-Index to decline and close in the red.

At the end of the first session of the new year 2024, the HNX-Index decreased by 1.05 points, equivalent to 0.45% to 229.99 points; the HNX30-Index decreased by 4.99 points, equivalent to 1.01% to 489.89 points. The liquidity of the Hanoi Stock Exchange in the January 2 session was very low. Only 61.4 million shares, equivalent to VND 1,235 billion, were traded.

In the stock market session on January 2, the mainstay of the VN-Index was bank stocks. In which, Vietcombank's VCB stock played a leading role.

At the close of the stock market session on January 2, VCB increased by VND 3,200/share, equivalent to 3.99% to VND 83,500/share; ACB increased by VND 550/share, equivalent to 2.3% to VND 24,450/share; SHB increased by VND 150/share, equivalent to 1.39% to VND 10,950/share; VIB increased by VND 200/share, equivalent to 1.02% to VND 19,800/share,...

However, the focus of the market is on electricity stocks. Before the New Year, there was information that a big electricity company was being inspected. Therefore, in the first session of 2024, electricity stocks rushed to "turn off the lights".

On the other hand, HAG and HNG - the pair of stocks related to Mr. Doan Nguyen Duc (Bau Duc) continued to impress.

Although Mr. Duc sold it to billionaire Tran Ba Duong, HNG shares are still remembered by the market as a code related to Mr. Duc. At the close of the stock market session on January 2, HNG hit the ceiling, increasing by VND320/share to VND5,020/share. In the last 4 sessions, HNG has had 3 ceiling sessions.

Although the stock market session on January 2 did not close in purple, Hoang Anh Gia Lai's HAG stock still increased significantly. HAG increased by 400 VND/share, equivalent to 3.03% to 13,600 VND/share.

Before the New Year, Mr. Duc attracted attention when he declared, "The name of Hoang Anh Company is my daughter's name, I will never abandon it." Previously, HAG shares increased sharply when Eximbank wrote off more than VND1,450 billion in profit for Hoang Anh Gia Lai.
