Dak Lak: Reducing plastic waste

Việt NamViệt Nam07/10/2024

In recent years, Dak Lak tourism industry has been growing, attracting a large number of tourists to visit. Along with promoting tourism development, responding to environmental pollution, especially from plastic waste,

Take initiative

Realizing the importance and necessity of environmental protection, over the years, a number of tourism businesses in the province have sought solutions and initiatives to "fight" plastic waste.

Since 2013, Ko Tam Community Ecotourism Area (Buon Ma Thuot City) has been operating with 5 goals for tourism development, of which the primary goal is to protect the environment and create green spaces for tourists. According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Ko Tam Community Tourism Joint Stock Company, since its inception, the unit has used environmentally friendly products to replace plastic utensils. Specifically, the tourist area grows bamboo to make straws and uses paper cups to serve customers. In addition, the resort area has bamboo trash bins, divided into two compartments for organic and inorganic waste.

Plastic waste (inorganic) will be collected and sold to recycling facilities. As for organic waste, bamboo straws will be collected, dried and burned to get ash to fertilize plants. Ms. Ngoc Anh said: “Although using bamboo straws and disposable paper cups will cost 10 times more than using plastic products, it brings positive effects in protecting the environment and gaining sympathy and satisfaction from customers. It is estimated that each day the tourist facility uses about 500 - 700 straws and 300 cups of water, which means limiting a large amount of hard-to-decompose plastic waste released into the environment. In addition to serving tourists, the facility also arranges water purifiers for employees to use glass cups and personal thermos bottles to drink water to limit the use of plastic bottled water.”

Identifying measures to reduce plastic waste, maintain green spaces at tourist destinations and workplaces that require human factors, Buon Don Suspension Bridge Tourist Center has implemented a program to raise environmental awareness for staff. Accordingly, since 2023, the facility has implemented the Simexco Eco-Friendly and 5s Kaizen programs with the goal of enhancing the role and responsibility of managers and staff in environmental awareness and practice; gradually controlling the use of green technology, minimizing pollution, and being responsible in handling waste released into the environment.

Specifically, managers and employees at facilities take the lead in implementing a zero-waste circular economy; do not discharge untreated wastewater or polluted smoke and dust into the environment; collect and classify garbage, strictly prohibit littering of plastic waste and cigarette butts; plant trees, increase green space in workplaces and tourist areas...

Mr. Nguyen Duc, Deputy Director of Biet Dien Tourism and Hotel Branch, direct manager at Buon Don Suspension Bridge Tourism Center, said that after more than a year of implementing the program, the majority of officers and employees at the tourist facility are aware of using glass cups, collecting and classifying waste to limit plastic waste in the environment.

In addition, instead of using decorative plants or plastic flowers in the rooms, each room has been planted and cared for by the staff. At the same time, from the fund contributed and mobilized from employees and sponsors, the tourist facility has planted more than 400 trees to create a landscape. In addition, the facility always reminds visitors to protect the environment well; arrange a scientific and complete system for collecting and treating wastewater and waste; hang propaganda banners, regulations, and environmental protection signs in the tourist area and spots.

Variety of solutions

The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said that in order to protect the environment and develop sustainable tourism, over the years, the unit has made efforts to deploy to tourism businesses in the province a number of contents related to the prevention and combat of plastic waste.

Specifically, carry out communication to raise awareness among employees, workers in the unit as well as tourists about classifying, collecting, and minimizing plastic waste; coordinate with relevant organizations and individuals to encourage tourists to limit or not use disposable plastic products.

Incorporate criteria for reducing plastic waste into the internal regulations and rules of the unit; launch emulation movements and mobilize employees to reduce and eventually not use disposable plastic products and hard-to-decompose nylon bags; strictly implement policies to reduce plastic waste according to regulations. At the same time, prioritize the use of degradable, reusable, environmentally friendly products to replace hard-to-decompose, single-use nylon bags; classify waste...

The Department sets a goal that by 2025, historical sites, scenic spots, tourism service businesses... will use 100% of environmentally friendly plastic bags and packaging; ensure the collection, reuse, recycling, and treatment of 85% of the amount of plastic waste generated. To achieve this goal, the Department is currently focusing on propaganda and launching the campaign "Say no to disposable plastic products", preventing the risk of plastic waste and plastic bag pollution to the living environment and public health; diversifying the forms of integrating propaganda at regular meetings, organizing the hanging of banners, billboards, posters, and slogans on environmental protection; mobilizing cadres, workers, and relatives to participate in the movement "Say no to plastic waste, say yes to green consumption"...
