Bao Ngoc starts a business with an "unstable" restaurant at home
Sell 7 dishes a day
Graduated from the Food Technology Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Ms. Vu Thi Bao Ngoc (born in 1997) found a stable job in her desired major.
After a while, the company was dissolved. With her experience and current job position, Ngoc was completely capable of applying for another company, but the Gen Z girl made a bolder decision.
"On days when I work overtime, I don't start coming home until after 9pm. Every time I get home and see my parents standing outside the gate, waiting and worried, I feel a little sad. Money is important, but to me there are many more important things," Ngoc said.
Because she wanted to have more time for her family, Ngoc decided to start a business at home.
The restaurant's menu changes every day, making the online community excited.
In 2023, with her passion for cooking and her ability to speak fluently, Ngoc decided to become the head chef and open a breakfast restaurant. At this time, most of the restaurant's customers order online.
"After a while, the number of customers gradually increased. Whatever the customer craved, I cooked it. From cooking one dish, the restaurant "upgraded" to cooking 7 dishes (including breakfast dishes and snacks)" - the owner said.
The owner smiled and said that the restaurant does not hire outsiders but is assisted by her family, and the menu changes every day. The restaurant has been open for more than a year but there are still many shortcomings, many unexpected situations occur such as missing orders, forgetting to add broth, making customers wait for a long time, etc. Fortunately, the customers also understand this "instability" so everyone is happy.
Both delicious and strange
Some of the restaurant's signature dishes include Fujian yellow noodles, seafood noodle soup, octopus vermicelli soup, crab and char siu wonton noodles, char siu milk noodles, tempura fried pork rice, etc.
"The area where I live is quite far from the city center, most of my customers are manual workers or students. Popular dishes like noodles and bread are available everywhere. As for special dishes, which are a bit more complicated to cook, the price is quite high, not all areas sell them. Therefore, I want to cook special dishes, even though it's hard, but seeing customers enjoy the food, I naturally have the motivation to try harder" - Ngoc excitedly said.
"Thanks to the constantly changing menu, I come to the restaurant every morning. I don't have to think too much and I'm not afraid of getting bored. There are some strange dishes that I'm eating for the first time," said a diner.
The restaurant owner posts the next day's menu on social media so that regular customers can check it out and order early.
From 6:30 to 9:00, Ngoc can sell more than 200 breakfast portions, priced from 30,000 to 35,000 VND. In addition, Ngoc also sells snacks.
Mr. Cong Khuong (Tan Binh district) said he was attracted by the "unstable" menu board that spread online, and when he arrived, he was even more surprised by the very intimate space of the restaurant.
"The restaurant is not crowded or jostling, but is located in a home garden, surrounded by green trees and fresh air. This is the first time I have enjoyed a bowl of crab wonton noodles with char siu for only 30 thousand VND but with such quality and a lot of meat" - Mr. Khuong said.
Since his daughter opened a restaurant, Mr. Vu Van Quy became a "shipper" and professional kitchen assistant.
Recalling the early days of starting her business, Bao Ngoc shared that she was shocked when she continuously lost money. The money she spent on groceries was 1 million VND but the sales revenue was only about 600,000 VND. Ngoc could not balance the restaurant's income and expenses. Thanks to her parents' encouragement, she overcame the difficult period.
Ngoc confided that being an office worker has a stable and higher salary but she herself does not feel comfortable. Selling at a restaurant is hard but brings a lot of joy, especially her parents are also very happy to chat with customers every day.
"My parents are getting old, I really want to spend more time taking my family on trips, to have more free time. My dream is for the restaurant to have stable business, this is the gift I give to my parents" - Bao Ngoc said.
