According to information from leakster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is testing a larger 200 MP main camera sensor, but has not revealed further details. This 200 MP sensor promises to deliver images with lossless optical zoom, eliminating the need for a dedicated telephoto module for portraits. The larger size will allow the sensor to capture more light, which is especially useful in low-light conditions.

Currently, Chinese OEMs are mostly using 1-inch 50MP sensors for this role, and many are curious about developments in the smartphone camera field. Sony is said to be working on a 200MP main camera sensor that is slightly larger than the 1/1.3-inch size of Samsung's 200MP ISOCELL sensor on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. However, it is still unclear which OEM will be the first to integrate this larger 200MP Sony sensor.

An interesting question is whether it would be possible to combine the larger 200MP Sony sensor with other 200MP sensors for periscope telephoto shots? Digital Chat Station says that currently no OEMs are working on developing phones with two 200MP sensors, but that could change in the future.

At the moment, OEMs are facing the decision of whether to equip a 200MP camera for the main camera like the Galaxy S25 Ultra or for a periscope telephoto sensor like the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. Using a large 200MP camera sensor will create a thick and bulky camera cluster, while the space inside the phone is already limited. When these are solved, we can witness the birth of a "camera monster" with a 200MP main camera and a 200MP periscope telephoto camera, enough to meet most users' photography needs.
