US tests long-range missile designed specifically for the Pacific front

The US has successfully tested a new line of precision missiles demonstrating its extended range capability in preparation for a potential conflict in the Pacific.

The US Army tested the PrSM Increment 1 missile loaded onto HIMARS at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on March 19.

Newsweek magazine reported on March 24 that the US Army conducted a test of the Increment 1 Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California (USA).

The test was held on March 19 (local time) and the missile was fired from the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), according to information from the US Space and Missile Operations Office.

The test showed that the PrSM Increment 1 missile has enhanced the US Army's long-range precision strike capability.

Manufacturer Lockheed Martin said the missile can hit targets about 500 km away.

PrSM Increment 1 was first delivered to the US Army in December 2023 to replace the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) with a range of about 300 km that has been in use since the Cold War.

Breaking Defense reported that the PrSM has three other versions, including an anti-ship version, a version with an enhanced warhead, and a version equipped with a new propulsion system to increase the range to 1,000 km.

The US is aiming to establish a network of firepower on the main terrain of the first island group in the western Pacific, thereby limiting the enemy's attack capabilities in case of conflict in the region. And the PrSM missile will serve this goal.

Also last week, the US Marine Corps conducted an exercise called HIMARS Rapid Infiltration (HIRAIN) in Japan.

HIRAIN enables rapid deployment of long-range firepower in the Indo-Pacific region, control of key terrain, deployment of HIMARS, destruction of targets, and withdrawal to a safe location.
