These malicious apps are disguised as various software, such as health and fitness trackers, battery optimizers, QR code scanners, note-taking tools, and diaries.
According to security experts, these malicious applications will display pop-up ads, then try to trick users into providing personal information and bank accounts, thereby carrying out phishing attacks.
The list of 8 malicious applications that attracted many downloads includes: AquaTracker, ClickSave Downloader, Scan Hawk, Water Time Tracker, Be More, BeatWatch, TranslateScan and Handset Locator.
According to experts, these malicious applications have bypassed Google's security barriers using a number of tricks. Specifically, the version posted on the app store does not contain malicious components.
Once installed on the victim’s phone, the app will ask for an update, at which point the malware will be installed on the device via an update downloaded from a third-party server.
These malicious apps can display fake Facebook and YouTube login screens to steal login information or ask users to enter credit card information in various forms.
