Upon hearing the news of the earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Ishikawa Prefecture and neighboring areas in Central Japan, causing great loss of life and property, on January 2, 2024, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent a message of condolences to Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.
On the same day, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son also sent a message of condolences to Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko.

As of 1 p.m. on January 2 (local time), the death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Ishikawa Prefecture on the afternoon of January 1 has risen to 30, with dozens more injured. Along with the magnitude 7.6 earthquake, 155 aftershocks have caused major damage to urban structures and caused many fires in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture.
Many road systems were destroyed, while more than 33,000 households were left without electricity and running water. More than 1,400 passengers were affected when high-speed trains in the disaster area were suspended.
Up to now, Noto airport, Ishikawa prefecture has been forced to close due to cracked runway, 500 people are still stuck in the airport's parking lot.
Speaking at an emergency press conference held at 10:00 a.m. on January 2, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida affirmed that the damage caused by the earthquake was “on an extremely large scale.” The government will make every effort to accelerate rescue and relief operations in a “comprehensive” manner, on the basis of mobilizing all defense forces, coast guard, fire departments, local police, etc., thoroughly cooperating with relevant agencies, and sending leaders of relevant ministries and agencies to the scene to support the transportation of supplies and other relief activities.
