(NLDO) - A 2.6 magnitude earthquake on the evening of February 3 caused slight shaking in some suburban communes of Chuong My district, Hanoi.

The Institute of Geophysics said that at 19:52:41 (Hanoi time) on February 3, an earthquake with a magnitude (M) of 2.6 occurred at the coordinates (20.860 degrees North latitude, 105.582 degrees East longitude), with a focal depth of about 8 km. The earthquake occurred in Chuong My district, Hanoi. The natural disaster risk level is level 0.
The epicenter was in Thuy Xuan Tien commune, Chuong My district, located on the border of Hanoi city and Hoa Binh province.
Some residents in many communes in Chuong My district, about 30-40 km from the center of Hanoi, said they felt light shaking for about 3-5 seconds, but no damage was recorded.

According to Decision No. 18/2021/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister, regulating the forecasting, warning, transmission of natural disasters and disaster risk levels, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.0 - 2.9 is a weak earthquake.
When an earthquake is below 2.9 on the Richter scale, only a few people feel a very slight vibration. There is no damage to buildings. The average frequency of occurrence worldwide is over 1 million each year.
