Create a "shield" for your phone against fake software that steals money from your account

Many users suddenly lost money in their bank accounts after downloading strange applications and experts show how to create a protective layer for the phone, keeping it safe when transferring money via mobile.

When trojan malware enters a phone, it will silently steal personal data and bank account information of the user.

According to Kaspersky's 2023 information security report, the number of malware attacks that steal users' bank accounts on mobile devices increased by 30%, out of a total of 33.8 million malware targeting mobile phones. Many countries have seen a nearly 300% increase in malware targeting bank accounts. Among them, malware that focuses on attacking Android phones belongs to the Trojan-Banker.AndroidOS group.

In Vietnam recently, criminals took advantage of the times when people needed to register and authenticate personal identification information through the VneID application to create a similar fake application and use tricks to lure "prey" to install it, thereby taking control of the victim's phone and making money transfers, defrauding the victim's relatives through information in the contact list...

The number skyrocketed in the first quarter of 2024 when the Kaspersky Security Network recorded 10.1 million attacks by malware targeting mobile phones that were blocked by the Kaspersky Mobile Security application. Specifically, the information security monitoring system showed that the KMS application prevented 389,000 malicious applications from being installed on users' devices, of which 11,729 were applications containing trojan malware that specializes in stealing bank account information and 1990 were ransomware.

When trojan malware enters a user's phone, it will silently steal personal data, bank account information, and download other types of malware such as keyloggers without the victim's knowledge. They record all the user's actions and activities on the phone, silently sending that information to cybercriminals.

Mr. Ngo Tran Vu, Director of NTS Security Company, said: “Crooks create popular applications and distribute them for free to users who like to use them illegally from community channels or sharing networks. Because they want to use them illegally, users often agree to remove the Android protection layer and install these illegal APK applications, not knowing that they have also installed malware embedded in their phones.”

“Fake apps cannot be approved for the Google Play or Apple App Store, so scammers are forced to trick victims by impersonating police officers and calling them directly to ask them to install fake VneID, then sending them the installation file via Zalo Chat,” said Mr. Ngo Tran Vu.

“The fake VNeID application requests high-level access rights, including reading personal data and reading messages containing OTP codes that banks send to customers to authenticate money transfers. Accordingly, the fraudster controls the bank account application and transfers money quickly.”

Mr. Ngo Tran Vu believes that users can prevent most of these dangers with the following: Establish a mindset that always remembers "Any device that stores financial information and personal data must be protected and secured". Mobile phones also need to be protected against malware like computers (PCs); always raise security awareness by updating information and news. Regularly update warnings from police agencies, departments and agencies; be alert to tricks of scammers to lure them into installing fake applications. Applications such as VNeID or VssID are downloaded directly from the owner of the Google Play and Apple App Store; use security solutions such as Kaspersky Mobile Security for Android or iPhone phones to effectively prevent malware, lock applications and protect personal data... and remember the rule "slow down and check" when suspicious...
