In recent days, many images of men or women wearing pink dresses have gone viral on social media. According to cybersecurity experts, this is an AI-generated image manipulation. The image is created from an original photo using an application that allows users to superimpose their faces onto 70 pre-set outfits, resulting in a realistic-looking image. Applications like this are increasingly appearing on social media, generating considerable excitement among users.

However, cybersecurity experts have expressed concern about the possibility that images provided by users to the app could be exploited for malicious purposes such as online fraud.

Specifically, expert Vu Ngoc Son - Head of the Technology Research Committee of the National Cybersecurity Association - stated that Internet users need to be cautious when using this photo editing application. Using applications of this type requires access to the photo folder on the user's device. This poses a risk of information leakage and the disclosure of sensitive images.

According to Mr. Son, with the current development of AI, images are very valuable data. AI can identify a person, their interests, where they usually go, and even who they know, simply through photos. Collecting photos and selling them to companies that exploit and use the data is quite common. In cases where applications sell data, users may receive numerous advertisements, be bothered, or this data may be exploited for other purposes such as fraud or extortion.

"If users don't really know the origin of the application, they shouldn't download it. Users should be conscious of protecting their data. In the upcoming plan of the National Cybersecurity Association, Deepfake AI will be thoroughly researched and warnings will be issued to the community," Mr. Son advised.

The Vietnamese Cybersecurity Community page also warned that some AI-powered photo editing applications developed by foreign companies may request permission to access photos, cameras, device storage, and even other personal data upon installation. Without strict control, users' personal information could be collected and used for unintended purposes.

Photo data and personal information can be collected and stored on foreign servers without the user's knowledge. This raises concerns that data could be used for advertising, tracking, or even sold to third parties. Furthermore, the popularity of applications developed by reputable companies can lead to the emergence of many fake applications created by scammers. These applications may contain malware, posing a risk of stealing personal information, bank accounts, or being subjected to cyberattacks. Users need to be cautious and only download applications from official sources such as Google Play or the App Store to avoid fake applications containing malware; control access permissions and only grant truly necessary permissions; avoid uploading sensitive images to prevent the risk of personal data leakage; regularly check and update applications to avoid security vulnerabilities; and cancel unwanted service packages to avoid unexpected charges. In particular, when using applications from foreign developers, caution is needed regarding security and privacy risks to avoid unfortunate consequences.

Recently, the Ministry of Public Security issued a warning via text message (SMS) to mobile phone users nationwide about the exploitation of publicly available images and videos on the internet to edit, cut, and splice them into sensitive content for the purpose of threatening and extorting money from users. The Ministry of Public Security also advised people to be vigilant if they receive such messages or calls; not to transfer money when threatened; and to quickly report any signs of fraud or extortion to the nearest police station or report it through the VNeID application.
