The power of skin-to-skin contact after birth

According to medical experts, the “skin-to-skin” care method after birth is to create direct contact between the newborn and the parents immediately after the baby is born. This method will allow the baby to have direct contact with the parents’ skin by placing the baby directly on the parents’ chest or abdomen. “Skin-to-skin” after birth also brings many benefits to the baby, the mother and the medical facility.

According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021, the “skin-to-skin” care method saves the lives of more than 150,000 newborns each year. The information was given at the talk show “The power of skin-to-skin from the first day” held on the morning of March 13 in Ho Chi Minh City.

Speaking at the seminar, Dr. Le Quang Thanh, former Director of Tu Du Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Maternal and Fetal Medicine Association (HSMFM), Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Obstetrics and Gynecology Association (VAGO), said: “We think that right after the baby is born, we need to take care of it and create the best environment for the baby by weighing, warming it... But observation shows that it seems that we are not imitating nature. And when observing animals when they give birth, they still warm and breastfeed their babies... From there, the essential newborn care after birth was born, we began to apply the first hug or skin-to-skin care method”.

Dr. Le Quang Thanh also informed that this method is beneficial for both newborns, mothers and medical facilities. For children, this method helps keep them warm, their heart rate, breathing rate and blood sugar stable, and they cry less. In particular, it creates favorable conditions for the child's brain development. In addition, this method also stimulates digestive function, helps children gain weight steadily, and contributes to strengthening the child's resistance because the child will seek breast milk immediately after birth. "Moreover, being placed on the mother's stomach and chest helps the baby sleep more deeply, helping to bond better between the baby and mother. From there, the mother will feel secure, helping the mother reduce pain, reduce postpartum stress and recover faster. In addition, the medical facility also reduces the burden of caring for newborns," said Dr. Le Quang Thanh.

Having also gone through childbirth, content creator Giang Oi shared that when she was pregnant, she learned about and saw the benefits of the “skin-to-skin” care method, so she proactively applied this method. “After giving birth, my baby lay on my chest, I felt his skin gradually warming up, his heart rate also began to stabilize and he slept soundly, then the nurse instructed him to breastfeed immediately, I found that it was very good for both baby and mother,” said Giang Oi.

Also sharing at the discussion, Mr. Bui Hoang Phu, Director of Communications and Marketing of Glico Vietnam, said that although the "skin-to-skin" care method has many benefits for mothers, newborns and medical facilities, according to statistics, in Vietnam only about 20-30% of Vietnamese mothers practice the "skin-to-skin" method.
