(CLO) Former US President Donald Trump once again affirmed his admiration for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in a podcast program with a record number of viewers.

In an interview on comedian and UFC commentator Joe Rogan's podcast, the Republican presidential candidate claimed to have a "very good understanding" of Kim Jong Un.

Towards the end of his presidency, Mr Trump said he had worked to get North Korea to stop developing nuclear weapons, declaring on a podcast that "we don't have a problem with North Korea".

In 2019, Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un even met at a summit in Vietnam. The meeting was held with the aim of ending the Korean War and convincing North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

Speaking to Rogan, Trump said he had a friendly conversation with Kim Jong Un to convince him to give up his nuclear weapons, saying: “Do you ever do anything else? Why don’t you just relax? Go to the beach, relax.”

Former President Trump also claimed that Russia would never have attacked Ukraine while he was in the White House. Recalling his conversation with Mr. Putin, Mr. Trump said: “I said, ‘Vladimir [Putin], you’re not going in.’ I talk to him all the time.”

The Republican presidential candidate refused to reveal what President Putin told him, saying it would be “inappropriate.” He went on to say that Putin would certainly come clean about it one day.

Meanwhile, Mr. Trump also called Mr. Vladimir Putin and Mr. Kim Jong Un “smart” and “savvy.” Mr. Trump made these comments in response to reports from South Korean and Ukrainian intelligence that hundreds of North Korean soldiers are in Russia to participate in the war with Ukraine. Russia and North Korea have denied these allegations.

Podcast interview sets record for viewership

Former US President Donald Trump's recent interview with podcast host Joe Rogan - a comedian and UFC commentator - took the internet by storm, having been viewed more than 26 million times on YouTube in the first 24 hours.

Mr. Trump spoke with Joe Rogan for three hours on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” discussing in detail almost everything about Mr. Trump’s life — his first experience in the White House, his transition from business to politics, the 2020 election and the assassination attempt in July.

“The Joe Rogan Experience” is one of the most-watched podcasts in the world. It has 14.5 million Spotify followers and 17.5 million YouTube subscribers.

While Spotify and Apple Podcasts don't release viewership data for individual episodes, YouTube views suggest it was one of the biggest in the show's history and reached more viewers than any other podcast so far during the US presidential campaign.
