According to Reuters, witnessed by many students and educators, US President Donald Trump on March 20 signed an executive order essentially dissolving the Federal Department of Education, fulfilling a long-standing commitment to conservative voters.
The order would give nearly all power to decide education policy to states and local boards, a prospect that worries liberal education activists.
“We’re going to start dismantling the department,” Trump said at a White House event. A full shutdown would require an act of Congress, and Trump doesn’t have the votes to do so.
President Trump said: "Very simply, we are giving education back to the states."
The order follows last week's announcement by the Department of Education that it would lay off nearly half of its staff.
This is the latest move by Mr. Trump, who has been in office for about two months, to restructure the US government and turn the federal administrative apparatus upside down.
Education has long been a contentious issue in American politics, with conservatives favoring school choice policies that favor private schools, while left-leaning voters largely favor public school programs and funding.
