High-intensity cardio exercises such as jogging should be limited to 5 days a week.
How much exercise is too much?
Physical therapist John Gallucci Jr, in the US, advises: Normally, high-intensity cardiovascular exercises such as running and aerobics (such as cycling, swimming...) should be limited to 5 days a week. And a workout session should not last more than 90 minutes, according to the Daily Mail .
Meanwhile, other experts warn that frail women should reduce their high-intensity exercise, because they are at higher risk of injury. Heather Milton, a sports health expert at New York University (USA), advises that with low-impact exercises, such as cycling or yoga, frail women can still do five days a week. But with high-intensity exercises, it is recommended to reduce to less than five days a week.
A workout session should not last more than 90 minutes.
The danger of over-exercising is elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol, explains Davidson. Too much cortisol can interfere with the release of other important hormones involved in metabolism, bone repair, and blood pressure regulation, causing these functions to become compromised.
Over-exercising also causes inflammation in the body. Inflammation can impair important functions, such as the immune system's ability to fight off invading pathogens, according to the Daily Mail .
