On March 12, Director of Quang Ngai Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital Nguyen Dinh Tuyen said that the hospital's doctors had completed surgery to remove a 900-gram hairball from the stomach of a 12-year-old patient.
A 0.9kg hairball was removed from the stomach of a 12-year-old girl.
Previously, Quang Ngai Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital received a case of a child whose family brought him in for examination with pale skin, hard abdomen, and little appetite.
Clinical examination showed that the baby had mild abdominal distension, a palpable mass in the epigastric region and left hypochondrium, with relatively clear boundaries and firm density.
Blood tests, abdominal X-rays and gastrointestinal endoscopy showed that the patient had nonspecific gastrointestinal bleeding, gastrointestinal bleeding due to gastroduodenal ulcers and abdominal hair tumor.
Based on the diagnosis and consultation, the hospital performed surgery to remove the foreign object in the abdomen. Doctors removed a giant hairball, filling almost the entire stomach of the child, weighing 900 grams.
After surgery, the patient was specially monitored in the Intensive Care Unit, fasted, and given intravenous nutrition. His health is now gradually recovering.
