Additionally, alcohol contains ethanol, a chemical that dilates blood vessels. This dilation of blood vessels can cause headaches, especially in people with migraines. Alcohol also contains congeners, a compound naturally produced during the fermentation process. This substance can also trigger migraines in some people.

Insomnia is another cause of headaches. People who frequently have trouble falling asleep, wake up suddenly in the early morning, and are unable to fall back asleep are more likely to experience headaches in the early morning.

Sleep apnea causes morning headaches due to oxygen deprivation to the brain and prolonged insomnia.
