After sleeping over at her husband's classmate's house, Li Ying learned a valuable lesson about humanity that still moves her. She shared the story on social media.
During my vacation, my husband and I decided to take some time to travel to Yunnan. Coincidentally, my husband's classmate Xiaogang's family lived there. We planned to meet them.
When my husband called Xiaogang, he was so happy that he went to the airport to pick us up. Seeing us, Xiaogang came over and hugged my husband and said, "Welcome to our home, long time no see."
Xiaogang's wife was also happy: "You two must have had a hard time on the road, get in the car quickly, I've already prepared dinner."
Xiaogang's home is in a small town, half an hour's drive from the airport. On the way, the two families chatted happily, telling stories about their school days.
Xiaogang's wife was also very attentive, often talking to me, asking me questions, and speaking very politely. They asked me to stay at their house for a few days for fun. We happily agreed.
After dinner, my husband and I were a little tipsy, so we went upstairs to lie down. Xiaogang and his wife cleaned up and washed the dishes. I was a little embarrassed, so I decided to help.
When I went to the kitchen, I accidentally heard Xiaogang and his wife's conversation.
"Xiaogang, do you know that mom is in the hospital and you still invite friends home? If I don't ask my sister to help look after mom today, I don't know what to do?
Besides, our family's food is very expensive today. If it continues like this for a few more days, I'm afraid we won't be able to handle it.
"We had to borrow money to treat our mother's illness, and yet we still wasted it like this. I really feel sorry for her," Xiaogang's wife said, her voice helpless and tired.
Xiaogang seemed embarrassed but also encouraged his wife: "I know that, but when friends come to visit, we have to be wholehearted with them.
He was my good friend from school, it's been a long time since we last met, I don't know if we'll have many more chances to meet again. It's okay to spend a little more, dear. It's okay to spend a few more dollars."
I was stunned, quickly went back to my room, and expressed my concern to my husband. I felt a little sad but also sympathized with their situation. I didn't expect that my intention to stay for a few days would cause them to feel awkward.
My husband knows the story and sympathizes with them, but doesn't know how to make them not lose face.
After some discussion, the next morning, we decided to pack up and leave the house early and left 10,000 NDT (about 35 million VND) on the table with a thank you letter.
That very morning, Xiaogang called my husband, panicked: "Oh my god, why did you do that? We're so embarrassed. If you do that, isn't it the same as treating our house like an expensive motel?"
My husband explained: "Xiaogang, you don't have to worry. This money is for you and your husband to help. You can use it to take care of your mother."
On the other end of the line, Xiaogang's voice was broken, he seemed emotional and understood that we knew about his mother's illness. "Thank you and your wife, I will definitely pay you back if I have the chance in the future," Xiaogang said.
After hanging up the phone, my husband and I breathed a sigh of relief because we felt like we had just done a good deed.
Some time later, one morning, the doorbell rang. I rushed to open the door and saw Xiaogang and his wife standing outside. I was extremely surprised by this unexpected appearance.
Xiaogang's family came to thank us and said that the money had helped them a lot. His mother is now well again.
Xiaogang's wife looked at us with emotion. I was also choked up.
We happily invited them to stay at our house for a few days.
The two families had a great time together those days. We took them to the city's museums, famous old streets and surrounding scenic spots.
In the evening, we went to a famous local restaurant for dinner together and everyone had a great time together, cherishing our friendship more.
At that moment, I suddenly felt that no matter how much time passes, the most precious thing between people is understanding, sincerity and empathy between soulmates.
