In 2025, Vietnam will have 9 universities in the THE University Rankings 2025, 3 more than in 2024. Through the top rankings, universities are evaluated according to international standards, thereby identifying strengths and weaknesses to promote, have goals and strategies to improve the capacity and quality of activities.
The Times Higher Education (THE) organization announced the results of the 2025 world university rankings by field. Vietnam has 9 representatives, the largest number ever with 6 universities and 3 universities. Surprisingly, in its first appearance, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics was ranked 501-600, the highest among Vietnamese universities. Next are Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University, ranked 601-800. Also ranked for the first time, Hanoi Medical University and Ho Chi Minh City Open University are in the 801-1,000 and 1,201-1,500 groups, higher than the two National Universities, Hue University and Hanoi University of Science and Technology.
Specifically, the field of economics and business of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics is in the top 301+ and the field of social sciences is in the top 501+ of universities in the world, leading Vietnamese universities in these fields. Previously, on October 4, 2023, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics officially transformed into Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics. By the end of 2024, the school had 19 training programs successfully accredited according to the FIBAA international quality accreditation standards (Europe). The upcoming orientation of Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics is to expand training of new programs that are interdisciplinary, inter-disciplinary, and cross-disciplinary such as ArtTech, MarTech, FinTech, LogTech, Digital Business, Sustainable Management of Enterprises and the Environment, Data Analysis, etc. At the same time, new training programs are closely linked to trends in the fields of technology, engineering, and applied design such as Smart Cities, Computer Science, Information Technology, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, etc.
Professor Nguyen Huu Tu - Rector of Hanoi Medical University (HMU) informed that since September 2024, THE has ranked HMU at 801 - 1,000 in the world in the general ranking. By this year, the school is in the 501 - 600 group in health sciences. Explaining this result, Mr. Tu said that from 2021 to September 2024, the school has an average of 400 scientific articles published in prestigious international journals each year, a sharp increase compared to the previous period. In total, the school has more than 52,000 citations from articles. In recent years, the school has invested heavily in infrastructure and modern equipment for research and teaching. At the same time, it has promoted cooperation with the world's leading universities and research institutes, so that students and lecturers can access advanced academic and research exchange programs.
Mr. Tu said that previously, the school had not focused on participating in rankings but had appeared in some rankings such as ShanghaiRanking, US News and World Report... because these organizations considered many academic indicators from third-party data, not data provided by the school. The school's goal is to be in the top 100 universities in Asia by 2030.
With the same goal, the development strategy of the National Economics University has determined that by 2030, the university will be among the top 100 universities in Asia in the field of economics, management and business administration according to international ranking standards. According to Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong - Deputy Director of the National Economics University, to do that, it is necessary to focus on the development directions that have been outlined to maintain the position of a key, leading university. Because according to the ranking methods of the world's leading prestigious university ranking organizations, to have a high ranking, university education institutions must not only ensure comprehensive development, but also affirm their leading position in the university community.
According to Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education (Ministry of Education and Training), university ranking is voluntary and not mandatory for schools. In recent times, the number of schools participating in the ranking has increased. At the same time, more and more schools have registered to participate in the accreditation of training programs and accreditation of university education institutions for prestigious foreign accreditation organizations. This shows a good sign of international integration of Vietnamese university education institutions. Through ranking and accreditation, schools can compare and improve the quality of training, scientific research and position themselves on the world university education map. This is one of the significant positive impacts of the university autonomy policy.
Previously, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duc - Chairman of the University Council of the University of Technology (Vietnam National University, Hanoi) also expressed his opinion that higher education institutions should participate in university rankings because this is a playground that helps schools compare their strengths and weaknesses and where they are compared to other universities in the region and the world.
