Ha Vang Aquaculture Cooperative in Thach Ha Ward (Ha Tinh City) has invested in infrastructure with 1,000 plastic boxes for raising crabs using circulating water filtration technology. Initially, the model has brought high efficiency, contributing to increasing income for farmers.

For a long time, crab farming has been a popular occupation in coastal areas of Ha Tinh such as Nghi Xuan, Loc Ha, Thach Ha, Ky Anh and Ky Anh town. However, the traditional farming method in ponds still has many limitations such as large area requirements, difficulty in disease control and unstable productivity. To overcome these problems, some households and cooperatives have boldly applied the model of crab farming in plastic boxes, initially bringing positive results.

Ha Vang Aquaculture Cooperative (Thach Ha Ward, Ha Tinh City) is one of the pioneers in implementing this model. At the end of 2022, the Cooperative invested more than 1 billion VND to build infrastructure with 1,000 plastic boxes for raising crabs using circulating water filtration technology.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa - Director of Ha Vang Aquaculture Cooperative said: "The model of raising sea crabs in plastic boxes has many advantages over the traditional method. The finished crabs have good quality, are uniform, reduce loss, increase survival rate and ensure stable supply all year round. According to our assessment, this model brings economic efficiency 4-5 times higher than the traditional method".

Each plastic box only holds one crab to avoid crabs biting each other. The boxes are stacked to save space and are numbered to control the rearing date, crab weight, food and care process until harvest. The circulating water filtration system helps maintain clean water quality, limit pollution and ensure an optimal living environment for crabs.

By using the method of releasing seeds in alternating seasons (3 batches/year), the cooperative can proactively supply products and improve economic efficiency. According to the natural growth cycle, every 15 days, crabs molt once, gaining weight from 50-100g. After more than 2 months of raising, commercial crabs reach a weight of 300-400g/crab and are sold to the market.

It is estimated that each year, the facility can raise 4 crops, and at the mature stage, each crop, the cooperative can sell more than 7,000 commercial crabs. Currently, the cooperative's crabs are consumed in Ha Tinh and Hai Phong at the price of 650,000 - 700,000 VND/kg of soft-shell crab and 450,000 - 550,000 VND/kg of meat crab, bringing in hundreds of millions of VND in profit each month.

The initial success of the crab farming model in plastic boxes has attracted the attention of many aquaculture households in Ha Tinh. In early February 2024, Ha Vang Cooperative signed a contract with 10 households in Thach Ha commune, providing breeds, technical guidance and product consumption. The positive signals from this model open up opportunities for sustainable development for the local aquaculture industry.

Talking to Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Tran Quang Hung - Head of Economic - Infrastructure Department, Ha Tinh City People's Committee said: "The project of raising sea crabs in plastic boxes of Ha Vang Aquaculture Cooperative is a model of restructuring production towards urban agriculture, developing production associated with concentration, accumulating land, forming specialized production areas. The sea crab farming project has applied science and technology in breeds, methods, and forms of production, linking agricultural production with services and building brands to increase the value of agricultural products".
"This model has achieved certain successes, helping crab farmers have a stable income. We appreciate the creative solutions, professional and modern methods, bringing high economic efficiency in unfavorable natural conditions of land, climate and environment. This project is also suitable for the development orientation of urban agriculture in Ha Tinh city", said Mr. Tran Quang Hung - Head of Economic - Infrastructure Department, Ha Tinh City People's Committee.
