Mr. Tran Van Thanh, Binh Hop commune, Tan Ky district, Nghe An province, builds cages to raise the specialty black apple snail (stuffed snail) on the irrigation lake. Restaurants come to buy the black apple snail, helping his family earn more than 500 million VND/year.


Thanks to raising the specialty black apple snail in cages, Mr. Thanh has gone from a near-poor household to a well-off one, earning more than half a billion VND each year.

The farmer raises black apple snails in a strange way on the irrigation lake bed.

Black apple snail is a specialty in Tan Ky district, Nghe An province. Black apple snail is rich in nutrients, cool and nutritious, so it is a delicious dish loved by the people here.

In nature, black apple snails are rare and difficult to buy for enjoyment. In recent years, people in Tan Ky district, Nghe An have developed black apple snail farming models in the direction of high-value commodities.

Among them, the family of Mr. Tran Van Thanh (born in 1988, in Binh Hop commune) is one of the households raising black apple snails commercially in large quantities.

"Previously, I worked as a mechanic, but due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, there was little work and my income was not much. I decided to return home to start a business. My family rented the water surface of Khe Bo irrigation lake to raise fish in cages, but it failed, losing about 100 million VND.

After that, I tried to put black apple snails in the cage for experimental breeding. After a short time, the black apple snails grew rapidly. I started to expand to other cages," Mr. Tran Van Thanh shared about his "fate" with black apple snails.

Before starting to raise black apple snails, Mr. Thanh's family was among the near-poor in the locality.

Family life is difficult, income is unstable. Realizing that black apple snails are easy to raise and the market demand is high, Mr. Thanh boldly expanded his model. Currently, Mr. Thanh has 12 cages specializing in raising black apple snails on Khe Bo irrigation lake.

People usually raise black apple snails in ponds and fields, but Mr. Thanh raises them in cages on the lake bed. This is the first mud-free black apple snail farming model in Tan Ky district, Nghe An. Therefore, black apple snails are clean, have delicious, sweet meat, and are popular in the market.

Mr. Thanh designed a cage measuring 5m x 8m. The cage area is suitable for cleaning and harvesting black apple snails. In the cage, Mr. Thanh planted duckweed as both food and a living environment for black apple snails.

In addition, Mr. Thanh also raises duckweed to ensure food sources for black snails. At the same time, during the development process, black snails are also provided with some types of food made from fish to ensure meat quality. Black snails are released in a rotational manner, so this owner always has specialties to supply to the market.

Near-poor households now earn nearly half a billion dong each year thanks to the specialty black apple snail.

"Black apple snails are easy to raise, can withstand harsh weather, and have few diseases. I raise them in separate cages so I can manage and monitor the growth process of the black apple snails.

Besides, the food source for black apple snails is also quite cheap and I can be proactive, so the economic efficiency is quite high," Mr. Thanh shared about the process of raising black apple snails.

Black apple snails are raised on clean irrigation lakes, have fragrant and sweet meat, so restaurants come to buy them. Currently, Mr. Thanh is selling black apple snails to 5 large restaurants. Commercial black apple snails cost from 70,000 VND to 95,000 VND/kg, depending on the time. Each year, Mr. Thanh sells about 5 tons of snail meat to the market.

In addition, Mr. Thanh also supplies black apple snail seeds to local people. Each year, Mr. Thanh earns more than half a billion VND from selling seeds and commercial black apple snails. After 4 years of raising black apple snails, Mr. Thanh has become a well-off household in the locality.

Seeing the high efficiency of Mr. Thanh's black snail farming model, many people came to learn. Mr. Thanh also enthusiastically guides people on black snail farming techniques so that they can develop their economy.
